    Good thread.

Jaws has the edge fo sho. Better acting, more hard core and tense. Jaws is a classic.

    "Jaws"

Sometimes the best special effects is no special effects at all.

"Jurassic Park" hasn't aged well, but it was a fucking marvel when it first came out. I saw it in the theaters and couldn't stop raving about it for months afterwards. We had never seen special effects anywhere near that advanced up until then. It was a giant leap forward at the time, and still stood on it's own as a technical wonder years after it came out......even though it's considered commonplace nowadays.

Jaws a simple story....but sooo good. They were on the boat hunting/being hunted by the Shark for only 30-35 minutes but it felt much longer...in a good way. JAWS

course Jurassic Park is another of my favorite....both movie I can stop n watch again n again anytime.

    Jurassic Park has aged well.

It's still an incredible movie to this day, because IMO, the special effects aren't what made it great.

NOW... you take a movie like Independence Day, which was ONLY watchable in 96 because of the cutting-edge special effects at the time, ID4 is now a terrible movie, because its effects was the only leg it had to stand on.

Don't understand anyone saying jp hasn't aged well....that trex is still the best special effects ever filmed. They built a real dinosaur! It looks better than the most recent Jurrasic film

Yeah JP was an event when it released and I loved it. However despite Jaws scaring the hell out of a younger Genius, I still think it's the better film. I'd watch Jaws if it was on tv but wouldn't bother watching JP again.

Exactly. People saying JP is dated are talking out their asses.

On top of being a great movie on the story alone, it's STILL visually impressive to this day.

I re-watch BOTH every...single... time they're on TV. I never ever get tired of either. I've seen both EASILY over 50 times, but I honestly think I've watched JP a few more times - I know JP word-for-word.

I do consider Jaws the better movie, but not by some wide margin. Both are cinematic classics.

I agree JP has aged well but you don’t have to shit on ID to make your point. Both movies had good plot, pacing, good character development despite having a couple 1 dimensional characters. Plus JP had its dinosaurs but ID had a young very charismatic Will Smith who you just knew was on his way to becoming a superstar and both movies had the great Jeff Goldblum.

These films were made before having CGI meant you could halfass the plot the way they mostly do now.

ID4 is a very mediocre movie today.

It was a kick ass movie throughout the 90s, but you watch it today, and it feels pretty stupid.

BTW, Smith was ALREADY a superstar coming into ID4. The Fresh Prince made him a TV superstar, and he had already made Bad Boys, which made him a movie superstar.

For me ID doesn’t feel too stupid to watch today just like JP doesn’t. Like I said IMO your comparison was insulting to ID. It’s still a good movie and maybe Armageddon would have been a better comparison as that film has not aged well.

We'll agree to disagree regarding ID4. I think it's aged terribly, while JP is still a masterpiece.

As for Armageddon.... that movie was shit IN THE 90S, let alone now!

Everybody knows that Deep Impact is a MUCCCHHHH better asteroid movie than that piece of shit Armageddon.

The way I remember it was everyone liked Armageddon over Deep Impact back then. In fact I think most people shat on DI at the time. I remember liking both films. Today though it’s like you said, DI is a much better film.

    I disagree. Armageddon was better.

I get why someone would prefer Deep Impact. It takes itself more seriously, it has Morgan freeman who does a great job, Robert Duvall also great. It has more drama and deeper human themes and the Big wave the wipes out everything was spectacular. I also like the whole lottery bit where only 1M Americans were allowed in the caves in the event of the impact, which was very interesting.

However...what I liked about Armageddon was the detail on the drilling itself, how they needed to work out the best scenario for saving the planet and how they needed the world's most proven deep core drillers. I like the fact that they focused on what perils you would find on an asteroid and they spent most of the movie on it. I like the whole slingshot around the moon sequence. I liked the drama surrounding the President trying to remote detonate from Earth and the guys on the Asteroid stopping it in time and the near mutiny on the asteroid. I like the fact that the second team who were thought to be dead arrived in the nick of time to continue the drilling.

Armageddon had more action sequences and more attention to space detail.
Deep impact put more attention to human drama on the ground and politics etc.

It's down to personal preference...but you act as though it's a given.

Well that makes me in the minority. Even in the 90s I preferred DI and thought Arma was garbage.

DI's special effects are awesome to this day. The way they executed the asteroid strike was more impressive than any current disaster movie.

I personally think you're looking too deep (pardon the pun) into Arma. It's a cheesy movie, and Bruce Willis looks he's just there to pick up a check.

    But to each his own.

2012 wasn't THAT bad to honest. Faarrrr from quality, but it kept my attention. Granted, I haven't watched it since seeing it in the theatre.... it probably looks bad now.

San Andreas... now THAT'S a bad disaster movie. Fucking HORRIBLE HORRIBLE movie... I wanted my money back.

Armageddon is more rewatchable for me. I love all of that space science mumbo jumbo. Plus I absolutely detest Elijah Wood's character in DI, and that spoils it a little for me.

Funny enough...you love "the Core", as I do, and that film uses more of the Armageddon template than the Deep Impact template.

I refused to even see San Andreas TBH. I don't see myself watching it anytime soon.

Funny enough though, I didn't mind Day after Tomorrow...even though many hate it...it wasn't great but whenever it comes on TV I watch it.

Day After Tomorrow is bad, but it still beats out San Andreas.

I like The Core. That's a fun one to watch.

Arma is hot garbage. It didn’t seem like it at the time but try watching it today. Sure it has all the cool points Sly mentioned, plus more action sequences but look at all the drivel you have to wade through to get to that good stuff: a boring love story, the ridiculous chase with the shot gun on an oil rig, singing that stupid leaving song, the search for all the oil riggers and their dumb lame stories, the medical and mental tests, the waste of time at the refueling station, the team getting split up, the one guy going nuts. It all seemed cool back then but know it just makes the movie drag and totally ruins the pacing. DI is just a much better film which is saying something for a film that had so many separate stories to balance.
