Which was the better of these two excellent psychological thrillers?

Misery was far more distriburing and creepy, therefore better. Bates in Misery is FAR and AWAY the best female performance in a horror movie.

Cape Fear is quality though. Great performances by DeNiro and Nolte.

But I'd give a pretty clear edge to Misery.

"Cape Fear" was much more enjoyable to me.

Two really different kinds of movies though.

Cape Fear is more rewatchable, but Misery does a much better job of accomplishing what a great thriller should accomplish.... freaking you out.

Cape Fear isn't creepy to watch for anyone who's older than 12. But it's still a good movie.

Yeah, I never really re-watched "Misery". I think it probably made me feel real claustrophobic and icky. It did it's job, but I just have some type of hangup about it, that makes it uncomfortable for me.

Cape fear easily. SO much hitchock in that movie. Nolte, lange, Deniro all great. James caan is not that great of an Actor IMO and he actually brought miserey down.

I also think Jessica Walter in "Play Misty for Me" is the best female horror villain

Cape Fear and it’s not close.

CF feels like an actual movie where you go places meet different people get plot twists and reversals and mixed feelings.

Misery just keeps you in that damn house, mostly in that damn room makes you feel claustrophobic and uncomfortable. As a film that’s just not an enjoyable experience for me which is pretty much why I never rewatch it.

I don't find CF creepy at all, but it's very good.

You can argue it's DeNiro's best performance of the 90s. Either that or Heat.

I found deniro character very disturbing. He was a very believable pyschopath. Sadistic. Obviously, dangerous.

Max Cady got overshadowed because he wasn't even the most popular psychopath of that year. CF came out the same year as Silence of the Lambs.

Cape Fear has more replay value than Misery. I watched Misery only once. I still am upset no one saw the obvious comparisons with a 70s made-for-tv movie with exactly the same plot of 'Misery'. Ah, Stephen King, not very original!
