I agree, Scarface is an overrated pile of dirt. Carlito's way is great. I love that pool hall scene.

Underated because it was little ass Leguizamo...but great/memorable character though he was on screen for what? 8 minutes?

I loved scarface growing up it was my favourite. Carlitos way is still one of my favourites tho- only gangster film that would make my top ten

Pacino actually ACTED in Carlito's Way. And you actually CARED about Carlito, and felt at the end when Blanco killed him.

In Scarface, he didn't act. He did literally nothing but scream and curse in that horrible Cuban accent for three hours. Tony Montana isn't a character I gave a shit about... I was glad at the end when they killed him and finally shut his annoying ass up.

don't want to choose between these two - they complement each other. both pacino-de palma, and both gangster tragedies, at different stages of life. (only realised recently that the same actor who plays the Colombian ringleader in the chainsaw scene in Scarface also does a cameo as Rolando in Carlito's Way - the guy who used to be Carlito's partner.)

yeah yeah yeah, scarface was over the top etc. but the movie was fucking brilliant at what it did - & has had a general impact on our culture. good script by Oliver Stone, good directing by de palma, and great acting by pacino, his buddy, pfeiffer, f murray abraham, and pacino's boss/rival Frank. it tails off once tony gets into his hubris stage and is just sitting around snorting coke, but the movie as a whole does enough for it to be recognised as a classic.

I like them both as well. An advantage Carlito's Way has is Penn's character. Scarface is pretty much all about Tony Montana.

Carlitos way is objectively better made, better directed, better writen, better acted. But scarface is incredibly visually iconic, quotable and fun. Even the shitty 80s pop music is brilliant

In someways its better grouped with something like predator or even top gun than a film like carlitos way- a ridiculously over the top, quotable, FUN 80s guys movie

The FINAL SCENE when they invade his home is fun... everybody can admit that. But that doesn't change the fact that the rest of the movie isn't fun.

if you can watch the first half of scarface - i.e. from the opening to when he kills frank and goes to collect elvira - and not find it fun, you must have a testosterone deficiency

No, you totally gave the wrong fucking answer. To hate both these films should borderline be a bannable offense. As it is I’m sending you on a little vacation for that. See you in two weeks.

I think you might need to watch it again. I remember as a teenager I always babysat my cousin every other week or so and her dad had Scarface on VHS. The first time I watched it I didn’t like it. Out of boredom I watched it again and really liked it. After that I probably watched it every time I went over there. It really is a fun movie that I think you would see with another viewing.

Also you should recognize you missed something or didn’t get it, the same way I do when it comes to Fargo. Not liking films that consistently beloved means there is something wrong with the person watching it.

Scarface is a film I think you really had to watch when it was new to appreciate. I didn't watch it until way later and was thoroughly unimpressed.

I watched Scarface as a teenager, not that long after it was released, maybe in 1990, and thought it was fun. I rewatched it later expecting to have fun and I was disappointed. I don't understand why it reached that cult status. I might have testosterone deficiency. But that's not what she said.
