Film cults that you're a member of

confusing title I know. Let me explain...

What films are not considered classics by the mainstream and few have watched and liked them, but those few are extremely passionate about those films, you being one of them. Some films have a "cult following" and you're a member of that cult.

For me it's

"Somewhere in time" with Christopher reeve and Jane Seymour.

I love that film and those that like it...LOVE IT too

 

I have no idea in all honesty.

 

Not gonna lie, this is a good question... but I'm not sure.

 

I've had a think and my answer is probably way off, but I'm going with The Colour of Money, ft Paul Newman and Tom Cruise. Is it a classic when compared with The Hustler? The Hustler is an absolute classic. The Colour of Money has been watched by many though so I'm probably off the mark.

According to it's IMDB score, it's borderline piece of shit.

It's retarded how much I like that flick. I think I've seen it at least a half dozen times in the last year, and I'm not one to normally rewatch recent movies.

Yeah, I don't know really, or if I'm a one man following. It's always fucking on the various movie channels though. I don't mean On Demand or a showing I have saved on the DVR, It seems like it's always freaking on, which is one of the reason I've seen it so much.

It's low budget, didn't make any money at the box office, so I assume they keep on putting it up because people keep watching it.

 

the original concept of a 'cult film' was a movie that flopped at the box office and was trashed by critics, but yet it developed a rabid fan following that talked, eat and breath about that film. The Rocky Horror Picture Show is the perfect example of that.

I am not sure if that is what you are talking about since you can love a film no one else seems to like doesn't mean you are in a 'cult' for that film.

 

The Color of Money doesn't meet the thread criteria: it was a critically acclaimed film, a box office hit and received 10 Oscar nominations including Best Picture. Also it doesn't have a devout fanbase; people just like it because is a good film.

Cool. I read the shawshank Redemption did poorly at the box office yet it's an awesome film.

 

I'll say that Xanadu is my pick for this thread: it was trashed so bad by critics that it practically ended the film career of both main stars; it bombed so badly at the box office that it send a scare signal to other studios to stop their plans of greenlighting more musicals. BUT those few people that watched it absolutely loved it to the point that decades later it spawned a successful Broadway musical. I love this film even though I KNOW is garbage.

 

Shawshank is a classic. Many great films did poorly at the box office when they first came out, like "The Wizard of Oz" and "Citizen Kane".

 

I give up then. Event Horizon was mentioned above. If that meets the criteria, I'm a fan of the film.

 

Big Lebowski qualifies.

 

TBL doesn't qualify because it's a critically acclaimed film.

Event Horizon meets the criteria as it was trashed by many critics and wasn't that successful at the box office, yet to this day, many people name it as a favorite (I watched it on its release weekend and honestly thought it was a great looking mess).

 

Would y'all say "The Last Dragon" qualifies? It doesn't seem like the type of film that would have gotten much critical acclaim and not that many people have seen it...but those of us that like it....LOVE IT!!

“Let The Right One In”. It definitely qualifies because it’s a foreign film that didn’t come to American theaters, yet it has a huge cult following in the US. There was an American remake called “Let Me In” and even though it was nearly an identical film it failed to capture the magic of the original because it didn’t have the same heart, atmosphere and presence.

I loved this movie so much I actually bought the book afterwards even though I hate reading fiction. On top of that this was the first instance where I wound up liking the film more than the book it was based on.

Just caught part of "Rules Of Attraction" again. I just can't help myself with this James Van Der Beek classic..........LOL!!

Middling reviews, doubt it made any money, has a following among the Bret Easton Ellis crowd, and is a 2002 movie they still show all the time on the cable networks, so I think it probably qualifies.

"American Psycho" also draws much the same crowd, but also seemed to get much better reviews then "Rules Of Attraction", so not sure if that qualifies.

 

I agree. Great movie. Really terrifying. Not so much scary, but disturbing.
