Name fighters who have gotten the most praise from the boxing media and delivered the least.

When Mount Whitaker KOed Oleg Maskaev, he became top-10 contender and was named the Fighter of the Month by the Ring with a five-page main article. His 'effortless power' was compared to George Foreman.

    Can anyone beat that?

Joel Julio. Lampley had a major hardon for the guy but he never accomplished shit.

    Michael Grant.

Beat Savarese and basically waited for Golota , who had him beaten, to implode, before being wasted by Lewis.

Ring Magazine had him down as a future star and also had him down as the "Most Underrated Fighter".

Boytsov is a good shout. Classic case where the guy looked fabulous against scrubs but couldn't beat anyone in top-20 and also preferred coke over training.

I don't quite agree with Grant though. He was definitely overrated but he was a legit top-5 guy with wins over Golota, Izon, Savarese, Cole etc. Boytsov was also ranked to top-10 with no credentials

Izon Savarese and Cole get you jack shit.

PS I think Obed Sullivan is the guy you are referring to.

    Golota was a career deck-chair.

I don't always write country songs, but when I do, I write them about Golota. Know when to fold them, know when to fold them.

The guy was touted to destroy Lewis and went on to be destroyed himself, first by Lewis, then Decline, then Guinn.

    Guinn

HBO is no doubt the largest source of over-hype.

It could be because they are the largest boxing source too. All medias get it wrong at times, as do us fans

Grant is a good example for the US.

I think it is related to their model - the way they sign contracts with fighters. They do not sell fights; they sell fighters. So they depend most of all on hype.

  14. Mount Whitaker is a great example. Didn't he change his name to "Goofy" just before facing and losing to Jameel McCline? What about Clifford Etienne?

  15. Zab Judah was intially hailed as "Pernell Whitaker with power". To his credit though...Zab did achieve a couple titles in two weight classes, one of them the undisputed Welterweight title...but he didn't live up to the initil promise.

  16. Michael Grant is perhaps the best example. I can't believe some people expected him to beat Lennox Lewis. lol

Vernon forrest was good, but not as good as his domination of Shane Mosley indicated. He got high praises until he got knocked out by what was IMHO a glorified clubfighter in Mayorga, who was tough and somewhat fast but limited.

I remember Zab being praised to high heaven. If I remember correctly, I think he was even on the cover of SI being called the next big thing.
This was right before Zoo made him do the chicken dance.

  26. Here's the problem with Vernon Forrest and his expectations after the Shane fight. Shane wasn't all that!! So it didn't take a GREAT fighter to beat him. the reason why Forrest may have been overrated after the Shane fight was because Shane himself was grossly overrated.
