Rank the best Alien Invasion films

Discussion in 'Movies & Televison: Reviews, Discussions & Debate' started by Destruction and Mayhem, Oct 11, 2017.

  1. For this thread an "Alien invasion film" is any NON-SATIRICAL (no comedies allowed) film where Aliens touch down on Earth, whether hostile or not.

For the sake of this topic...we also wont include Superhero films.

Examples are (but not limited to):

    War of the worlds
    Independence Day
    Signs
    Arrival
Close Encounters of the Third Kind

  2. Xplosive

Close Encounters and Arrival don't count then. Those are non-INVASION movies.

War of the Worlds are Signs are both excellent movies.

    ID4 is steaming dog shit.

The Thing should count, and if so, that ranks pretty high.

  3. I thought I already stipulated that Aliens touching down is enough?

    Just saw that part.

Well, in that case, I think Close Encounters is the best overall.

    District 9 was cool. ET?

Sly: there is a HUGE difference between Alien Invasion and Extraterrestrial First Contact. Close encounters is NOT an invasion of any sorts. It is Extraterrestrial First Contact (like The Day The earth Stood Still, E.T., Contact, The Abyss).

That said, you left out my childhood's favorite Alien invasion films like Earth vs The Flying Saucers , Teenagers From Outer Space, Invaders From Mars, Village of the Damned, Invasion of the Saucer Men and more recently (80s) They Live which is more influential today than when it came out.

The best for me is Close Encounters. Just love everything about that movie. Really like Independence Day too. Signs is one I also like.

What about Starman and The Faculty? Do they count?

Forget Sharman, that's just an Extraterrestrial movie and nothing to do with an invasion.

Independence Day has aged terribly. It's a stupid movie now.

I like Signs because it's one of M.Night's deepest movies. It's really a more about Gibson's internal struggles as a single father who's lost all faith in everything than it is about an alien invasion.

I'd take Signs over The Sixth Sense anyday.

Predator doesn't meet the criteria. It's not an alien invasion; just a sole alien that came to hunt as a sport, not to establish a colony.
