I think Eddie Murphy was both. Comedic actors don't get the love from the Oscars but Eddie was a great actor and movie star.

Denzel Washington and Tom Hanks would fit both, at least at some points in their careers. Robin Williams?

A current example is Ryan Gosling. One of the biggest stars in Hollywood today, and also, a great actor.

 

Paul Newman is a good example.

 

Have to say I really like him too. Which is weird because he basically only has one facial expression, ie slightly smug

 

He has the look of a pretty boy who can't act and only gets by on his looks, I.E. Paul Walker, and Channing Tatum, but Gosling never turns in a bad performance.

In fact, he turned in Oscar caliber performances in Half Nelson, and Blue Valentine.

He was also excellent in The Place Beyond the Pines.

 

He's minimalist but you feel like you can see cogs turning in there and his reactions, slight as they are, all seem natural and unaffected too. He's good.

 

Fassbender fits both categories.

No, I wouldn't say that Connery was a great actor. He did, however, have a charisma that dominated the screen. But on acting ability alone he was GOOD, but not great.
