Discussion in 'General Boxing Discussion' started by Destruction and Mayhem, Oct 16, 2017.

  1. Roy Jones was unchallenged at 168lbs but which of the following fighters would have given him his toughest fight at that weight?

    Joe Calzaghe
    Andre Ward
    Michael Nunn
    Chris Eubank Snr
    Nigel Benn
    Thomas Hearns
    Steve Collins
    Gerald McClellan
    Other

Are we going to include fighters who routinely weighed around 168 give or take a few pounds when they were professional "Light Heavyweights" before the Super Middle division existed?

lol Calzaghe would've gotten blasted ... he couldn't even stop Jones' corpse

Ward and hearns would make it uncomfortable for RJ, but I think their chances are slim. Benn and Mcclellan have the proverbial puncher chance, but that's not worth a lot. The oters are hopeless

Roy himself rated Calzaghe very highly, as did Hopkins and Leonard, so he can't have been that bad.

Calazaghe was a hard man to beat. His style, though ugly to watch, was effective.

That said, I still don't think he beats a prime Roy. And I think even Joe himself would probably admit that.

I don't think he beats prime Roy either, I was just answering the question.

  14. Legendary arsehole, you mean.
Never on the Calzaghe-Wagon ever since the interview with him pre-Eubank....I saw a complete mouthy cunt, protected by Werren, always cancelling fights, acquired 'stoppages' over C-rated Super-Middles by flashy/slappy handspeed that confused/swayed refs and never fought anyone of note until they were shot.

And nothing he did for the next 13 years changed my opinion.

he seemed pretty confident he wouldve whipped calzaghe in his prime when i asked him about that matchup

i think ward and eubank would have given him the most trouble

    Ward.

Prime Jones beats Calzaghe with consummate ease... a lot easier than Calz nuthuggers wanna believe.

  18. Don't listen to the cakzaghe haters, they probably picked lacy to destroy him too ( I know for a fact that xplosive did for one).

I'm in the camp that believes calzaghe would have given jones his toughest fight, given his workrate, speed, awkwardness and southpaw style.

Andre Ward is arguably better than calzaghe overall, arguably, but style wise he'd be an easier fight for Roy.

Hearns' boxing, speed and right hand would give Roy some fits early on but the moment Jones lands something hard you have to believe he'd knock him out soon thereafter.

McClellan has a true punchers chance but I think he gets hit way too much.

Nigel Benn has no chance and neither does Eubank.

  20. Did you pick calzaghe to beat lacy? If you did I'll give you a pass on this comment. Xplosive, however (who liked this post) is in no position to comment on calzaghe...he couldn't predict that Christmas would fall on the 25th of December.

lol why would that matter at all? You and Irish cling to the same logical fallacies

  22. It matters because it speaks to your credibility where Calzaghe is concerned., It proves that you'd pick against Calzaghe at any slight opportunity.

It's not arguable that Ward is better than JC. It's clear as daylight

I think Ward is a better fighter than Calzaghe, but I'd pick Calzaghe to give Roy a tougher fight.

We've seen Roy vs Ward (prime Hopkins) and Roy didn't have much trouble at all with him. Yes, Ward is better than Hopkins ever was, but not in a way that would change the Roy result, I think.

Calzaghe? Who knows. That goofy volume mixed in with skill, slaps, and power shots figures to give him a decent chance to win rounds against Roy.

Calzaghe would definitely win rounds. He wouldn't win the fight but he would put some stanza's in the bag. He's better than Ward too but I respect Ward, he's a good fighter.

Ward is best of the group, Calzaghe gives the best fight. Roy wins though so relax
