Pixar's Coco defeats Justice League at Holiday Weekend

Disney scores again. Its newest Pixar animation film Coco easily beat WB DCEU Justice League debuting with a Thanksgiving 5 days estimated total of $71 million or $49 million during the Friday to Sunday run. That puts 'Coco' as the third best ever Thanksgiving debut trailing only two other Pixar films: Frozen ($93M) and Moana ($82M).

While all is celebration at Disney, the picture at WB couldn't be more somber. While 'Justice League' pulled $60 million in its 5 days holiday frame, that number is even lower than what even the most pessimistic predictions were calculating ($66-$69M). For its Friday to Sunday frame it took an estimated $40 million or 56.6% drop. That puts 'JL' with a 10 days domestic total of $172 million...or just $5 million more than what the debut of 'Batman v Superman' pulled in just 3 days. Its worldwide current gross stands at $481.3 million...sounds great, but 'BvS' had passed $680 million at this same point. Justice League is so far the lowest performer of the DCEU since Green Lantern.

In the third place Wonder took $32 million in the extended holiday weekend or a three day gross of $22.3 million. That puts the Julia Roberts family film at $69 million current total and on route to $100 million domestic.

In the fourth place Marvel's Thor: Ragnarok added $24 million in five days or $16.7 million these last three days. Thor now stands at $277.4 million domestic and $790 million worldwide...and it cost a little bit more than half the budget of 'Justice League' (take note WB!!!).

And on the fifth spot Daddy's Home 2 took $13.2 million for a current domestic gross of $72.6 million.

People like to follow the box office numbers like it is going into their own bank accounts. These movies are making money or else they would stop making them.

 

Coco was decent.

 

They do make money, but not as much as the studio hoped. They are not in the same Marvel league. When Marvel makes a $200 million budget film it ends up grossing over a billion dollars. DCEU makes a $300 million budget film and it will struggle to make $800 million.

 

Coco repeats last week's feat by taking the #1 spot at the box office again...something the DCEU film with double the budget and double the marketing couldn't pull. In fact since no major movies were released this week the top five films are exactly the same ones from last weekend, but with different numbers. as I mentioned Pixar's Coco lead the pack with $26.1 million, which puts the animated movie with a 10 days domestic total of $108.6 million.

Again in the second place and again with a 59% drop Justice League took $16.5 million for a current three weeks domestic total of $197.3 million or just $6 million more than what AMarvel's The Avengers: Age of Ultron made in its first three days of release. Forget about this movie even making $800 million worrldwide (which was already a not so pretty figure), this film seems to be headed to a Man of Steel performance which puts it on the losing badly category. "Man of Steel" made $291 domestically and ended its worldwide run with $668 million gross. Even with its $225 M budget 'Man of Steel' performance was viewed as disappointing. Imagine how much more disappointing will be JL if only reaches those numbers. Honestly it looks like it will make even less as it currently stands at $567 million globally, it has no new markets to open and soon will fade away when 'Star Wars: the Last Jedi' behemoth swallows half of cinemas screens in 12 days.

Wonder continues overperforming taking $12.5 million in the third place for a current domestic total of $88 million. At this pace reaching the $100 million mark will be an easy task.

Holding nicely in the fourth place is Thor: Ragnarok which added $9.6 million to its domestic gross that currently stands at $291.4 million. It will cross the $300 million mark sometime this week becoming the 10th Marvel film to reach that domestic number. Worldwide it stands at $816.4 million. It will surely beat Sony's 'Spider-Man' and WB 'Wonder Woman' final numbers, but it will fall short of beating 'Guardians of the Galaxy vol.2' total grosses ($867 million).

Daddy's Home 2 stayed in the fifth spot with $7.5 million for a domestic total of $82 million.

 

For the third week in a row Pixar's Coco claims the crown at the box office in a slow week. Coco' took $18.5 million for a current domestic total of $135 million. It continues playing similarly to last year's 'Moana' which dominated for three weeks and then concede the title to a new Star Wars film. With 'The Last Jedi" coming out this Friday it will perform similarly.

Justice League again claimed the second spot with $9.5 million for a domestic total of $212 million. Its global cume is now $612 million, but with Star Wars: The Last Jedi and the animated Ferdinand taking half of all the screens this weekend, expect the DCEU film to plunge to even lower numbers and its prospects to at least reach Man of Steel numbers just evaporate dramatically. We can now officially call this film a box office bomb and WB will be doing a massive write-off for its loses. WB is revamping the whole DCEU, people being replaced, some projects shelved and only the ones currently in production (Aquaman) or in the preproduction stage (WW 2) will not be severely affected, but expect budget cuts even in those. Reportedly Ben Affleck is leaving so he will not star in the planned Batman solo film. If the WB really wants to compete with Marvel they need to bring Nolan & Bale for the Batman solo film and from there start from scratch. The much talked about 'Flashpoint' film is being seriously discussed if it is worth the risk and forget about a 'Justice League 2'...at least for now. There are rumors that Henry Cavill will be replaced. Apparently only Gal Gadot has a certainty to remain aboard.

Fuck off. The movie is much better than it's made out to be. People are rooting for the DCEU to fail and I don't know why. The biggest mistake WB did was not promoting Superman as part of the film. That was idiotic. That has nothing to do with the actual film itself.

I have two solid reasons why they do fail:
1 - They'e shit movies
2 - The public know they'e shit movies as the resulting box office figures illustrate.
