Degale has pretty good wins over Bute and Dirrell (I did not see the Groves fight). And even though I thought he lost to Jack, he did knock him down and had a strong performance. So if he looked like shit in his last fight (didn't see it), it is revisionist to say he was shitty all along. Just not true.
Bute maybe. But he'd only lost twice by the time he faced DeGale. But Dirrell? Lol. Guy had like 26 fights when he faced DeGale. "Far past his expiration date?" Please.
While it is fun to troll ol' Slicey about DeGale, you are pretty much spot on. They are two very different fighters, who fight in a different style and have different attributes, but they were about level in terms of their respective levels. That was borne out in their fight, which I though Groves won but (and don't tell Slice this) he did so in a wafer-thin fight. Froch would have lit DeGale up. Groves had that handspeed over the top which gave Froch real trouble early on until Froch figured him out and walked him down. Twice. Speed always gave Froch bother. DeGale doesn't have, and never had, any real handspeed. He's a good, straight up-and-down fighter. Exactly the kind of fighter Froch used to love facing. Plus, Froch was better than both. A level better, at least. MTF
Are you surprised? He can BARELY get by a bum like Caleb Truax nowadays. How in the Hell does he expect to beat a quality fighter like Uzcat?
It is somewhat amusing that when DeGale and Groves first turned Pro that DeGale was getting the love from the UK boxing press. DeGales biggest problems as Feebles alluded to did include a lack of variety to his fighting style, sort of shifty, sort of crafty, sort of athletic, sort of good, but not really very good at anything.........but he is also an irretrievably stupid man and has a ring IQ barely above that of Khan. DeGale is like one of those kids who is perennially wowed and dazzled by the turning-on of the Christmas lights at the local shopping mall. Stood there, agog, amazed, stupefied. His energy went into all the wrong things. His bombastic showdown with Groves in the buildup......{where he got owned by the same guy who was utterly punked by Carl Froch} ......his ringwalk music {which was shit} his fake, Harlsesden-In-Da-House Gangsta persona..... ......when he forgot that both he and Groves had gone into their fight unbeaten and celebrated prematurely during the announcement {"Still Undefeated...."}.....that just sealed the deal. I am sure he is a nice lad and loves his mum but he's probably overachieved in life. 30 years ago he would have been smashed at the Olympics and with same-day weigh ins he'd be fighting and losing {badly} to John Conteh and Matthew Franklin.
Bute wasnt past it at the time of the degake fight. In fact, he probably was in his prime, since he overcame his fear of getting hit at that time
Dirrell dropped off the map after the Abraham fight and never looked the same in his comeback fights.
I think so too, but I feel this is a better matchup than Uzcat-DeGale. DeGale looks washed up as fuck, and in all honesty, I'd pick Plant over DeGale at this point.
