I know, I was thinking the same thing. In HBO's heyday Matthysse-Karam wouldn't even make a BAD undercard. The network has gone to complete shit.

Because he's currently the best boxer at 160lb.

No obvious talent? He is fast and agile, with good coordination and reactions. His talent is plenty evident. He just lacks power really, that's it.

I can't believe some of you thought this was an interesting fight. Saunders is underrated and LeMook is a plodding scrub at elite level, just good at crushing cans.

Having said that, I wouldn't give Saunders much of a chance against either Canelo or GGG. Well, I guess he would have some chance of outpointing slow footed, low workrate Canelo.

Saunders would have a hell of a shot at beating Canelo imo. Would be a good fight. I think ggg would beat saunders though. But would like to see.

Yes, but Canelo would likely win.

Also, to make Canelo look like shit you don't have to box, a regular mirror will do

He definitely has the skills to beat Canelo, whether he would actually get the decision is another story.

He could win rounds off GGG and make it awkward but his lack of power means he won't be able to keep him off, and you'd have to expect Golovkin to walk him down at some point.

Gypsy boxers seem to be enjoying something of a purple patch at the moment.

Ggg would be a terrible matchup fpr saunders imo. He really knows how to cut the ring, and is jab is good enough to disrupt saunders

Oh he'd frustrate Canelo with ease.
    Points win for Saunders.

I don't agree, he's decently fast, but not blindingly so, he often looks uncoordinated, and as you say, he's a powder puff puncher. If you'd look at the guy on a punching bag, I don't think you would be too impresed.

He has good reflexte, but he's main attribute is the looseness he has in there

But surely it's that looseness and lack of 'talent' that confuses and confounds opponents?

At 160 he befuddles simpleton-Saul Álvarez.

At 160 he definitely poses a puzzle for Golovkin.

Don't get me wrong, I think Saunders is a pretty good fighter, cause he's so relaxed and confident in there.

I'm not willing to annoint him as the next coming just because he beat Lemieux. Lemieux is a bit of a scrub. Hell, he couldn't even beat Alcine who was getting koed by everyone at the time

Beating scrubby LeMook sure did make his stock shoot up though.

Before Saturday, Saunders was dismissed as an irrelevant scrub, now suddenly he beats Canelo :D

I believe it tells even more about how underrated Canelo is, mainly because nobody wants him to succeed. He has beaten quality boxers already

We know who Canelo is as a fighter at this point, and what his strengths and weaknesses are. We know that he does well against guys who come at him. But guys like Saunders are bad for him, and even when he "beats" them (in the case of Lara, I don't think he won), he doesn't look good doing - he struggles. Canelo doesn't have the best footspeed, and isn't good at cutting the ring... and that's not gonna change.

Saunders would be Hell for Canelo, especially considering he's shown a solid chin on top of his cagey style.

However, of course Canelo is a lot better and more skilled than LeMoo.

Saunders is a good fighter...and a threat to anyone in the division. I believe GGG beats him by late stoppage and Canelo beats him by close decision...but he'd give both guys hell IMO.

Haha, that's true, and in fairness it was the perfect opponent for him to look good against. I think the reason it caught me by surprise was because he put everything together for once. He tends to be a bit inconsistent, not just fight by fight but round by round. As I said, I've always thought he had talent and craft (especially with that right hand, very sneaky) but I find him a bit boring and hot and cold, plus his fights tend to go the distance. Wouldn't surprise me at all if he looks dogshit again in his next outing.

I think he'd be easy pickings for a prime Golovkin, but at this point, yes, he could give Golov problems.

I thought he looked good against Lee. And although I didn't see it, his win over Eubank Jr. is a good win. Evidence of this guy's ability is mounting. And a good boxer with a sturdy chin doesn't need one punch ko power.

The Eubank victory is a good win for sure, the first half of that fight he looked brilliant, second half he nearly threw it all away, which emphasises my point about his inconsistency. He looked absolutely awful in his two fights before this one, but yes the ability has always been there.

I just don't think Saunders will fight GGG. There's history of him saying he'd never fight him, even if he was offered a load of money.

I hope so. I think GGG may retire with wins over Canelo and Saunders.
