Cannot buy in

Has anyone else experienced a temporary or ongoing loss of interest in movies? Don't know if I'm just in desperate need of a really, "good" movie, or if movies in general have just become shit, or maybe it is just part of getting older? Depression maybe? Regardless, I find myself just unable to buy into or care about the stories. It feels like when you lose trust or respect for someone over something they did, and it's never the same again. Feels like movies try to fool us into caring. And I'm now onto their game. Anyone else experience this?

 

need to know how old you are doub, before we can say whether we've experienced same thing with age. you're like 65? 75?

in my late 30s, & i haven't experienced it. if the art's sincere & it felt like the director really believed in those emotions, then i'm ok with it

 

Not that old. Early 40's. Yeah. I think I just need a good movie. Too much sht out there.

That's what I'm finding. I used to be much easier to please I guess. Can you recall any films specifically that jolted you out of a slump like this? Restored your faith?

 

The last film that became an instant all timer for me was No Country For Old Men

 

For sure.
Last great period for interesting and innovative movies was early 1960s to late 1970s - that is when the big Summer Blockbuster Merchandise Movies kicked-off and a steady dumbing-down of audiences ever since.

Same with music.

 

No Country and There Will Be Blood are the two best films made since 2000. HOWEVER, there's been plenty of great movies made since.

 

I think it's common to go through this in all types of Entertainment. Be it Movies, or Sports, or TV, or Books, or Music, or FightBeat.com.

You don't see anything in a bit that inspires you, so you just don't give a fuck for awhile.............or you start to think you have better things to do with your time, or you wonder why you even give a shit about stuff that doesn't matter, instead of shit going on in your real life.

Then at some point something grabs you, and you're back in it again.

 

I am going through this exact phase right now. There are only very few potential films that truly grab my interest to care to try to watch. In the past I'll watch any shitty film from my favorite genres (scifi, superhero), but now I passed films like 'Spider-man Homecoming', 'Justice League', 'Alien: Covenant', "Blade Runner 2049", and many others that in the past I might have run to the movie theater to watch on their opening weekends. And even the ones that I watched (like 'Thor: Ragnarok' and 'Star wars: The Last Jedi" I had to struggle to stay awake.

In my case, I am getting old.

I can't recall many recent films which impelled me to a second viewing. It's possible that contemporary films just aren't very good on the whole but, then again, it's always easier to pick out the great movies from a given time frame - and forget the duds- with hindsight.

 

The lives of others, whiplash, Drive, blade runner 2049 for me, too.

 

Rewatchability is a difficult to explain sub-category of its own. I think everybody can name a bunch of films they found excellent but never really desired to watch multiple times. Sometimes there can be a fairly clear reason why. A simple example could be a twist ending which can never be quite the same the second time around.

 

Lying about getting old? FYI we ALL are getting old since the moment of birth.
