Cdogg is my boy, but Jeeeyysssuuss Christ I've never seen a bigger film snob. He only thinks maybe like 15 movies in history are great.
I'm with Xplosive on this one: The Poseidon Adventure was an absolute fantastic film when first experienced on a big screen theater. You felt you were there, trapped inside that upside down cruise ship. No other disaster film have been able to recreated that same claustrophobic feeling of endangerment and urgency. As for Dork Mocus comment, Towering Inferno was more about the A-list actors than the actual film. The special effects were pretty lame in many scenes even by 70s standards. Heck, Earthquake with the Sensurround gimmick was more memorable than Towering Inferno.
I'm not backing down on this ... it's a silly film... Hackman has even said he regretted taking the part while filming and he never says shit like that about any film (and he's been great in some really bad movies)
