Nothing has been confirmed yet, but plans have been made. The reason apparently is the corruption and the protectionism of AIBA.

Would be good for the sport

How could this possibly be good for the sport? Boxing relies on the Olympics for exposure to new talent from all over the world. Stem in the wrong direction imo. There are other ways to try to clean things ups by eliminating it completely.

    Because

    1) Without radical consequences such as these the fat cats of AIBA will never change.

    2) Olympics hasn't been a place to display young talent for a long time. It has been a place where grown-ass professional athletes beat juniors and take on one another under ridiculous rules.

    3) Less time wasted in amateurs means more young guns for pro circles, where we want to see the good fighters anyway

The U.S. will be hurt by this but there are plenty of other nations where fighters turn pro at a young age and don't even consider the Olympics. Also like UGBK pointed out it's often older grown men beating up on overmatched youths.

There once was a time where the Olympics were kind of a showcase for the next stars in the sport. Almost like college basketball where the teams/promoters were all hoping to sign that next superstar. Olympic success doesn't mean a whole lot any more. (especially with the dumb rules)

While I wouldn't say I'm in favor of eliminating boxing from the games I can't say I care that much either if they were.

Haven't paid attention to it in many years anyway, even though I intended to after they got rid of head gear.

Olympic boxing should be pros, like tennis - leave amateur boxing to kids younger than 18 so they can learn the craft.

Good for the sport my big black ass. Olympic boxing is a tradition. Many of the greats came through the Olympic ranks.

If the IOC wants to cut sports from the Olympic s they should cut football (soccer), tennis and other sports who have no place in an amateur Olympic Games. Leave Boxing the fuck alone

Barring a couple of exceptions, those days are long gone. Now to be successful in the Olympics you have to be ready to tackle good pros, which is why guys like Rigo or Golovkin should spend all their prime in pros.

Also, as I said, this might be the only way to destroy AIBA, which has done nothing but hurt the sport for the last 30 years

I'm siding with Ugo on this.

The olympic boxing glory days of Leonard, Spinks, Whitaker, DLH, ect are dead.

Now these phenoms who remain in the amateur system well into adulthood just to medal in the olympics will have to turn pro earlier, which means younger stars in the sport.

Didn't Amnat Ruenroeng who upset Zou Shiming in the pros go back to the Olympics only to get KO'd by an amateur fighter

I would think it is not a good thing, amateur boxing being one of the olympic sports which can really capture the public's imagination. I would suggest (without evidence) that one British boxing gold is worth two velodrome golds in terms of exposure and impact on sports participation. The trouble is that, even among the ranks of international sports organisations, the world amateur boxing bodies are really really shady, so this might be necessary. Speaking of really shady, MTK Global anyone? Isnt it wonderful how Matthew Macklin has used his boxing earnings to build a management stable and world-class gym....

Eons from now, we warriors will reflect like never before as we are awakened by the universe. It is a sign of things to come. We are being called to explore the quantum cycle itself as an interface between life-force and potentiality.

Reality has always been aglow with storytellers whose brains are baptized in rejuvenation. We are at a crossroads of flow and illusion. Our conversations with other messengers have led to a refining of supra-astral consciousness.

It may be removed from the 2028 olympics.

Team USA has 4 male boxers competing in Paris, one of which is a TWENTY NINE year old flyweight.

I was born in late 1972 so I was a little too young to remember the '76 team that won 5 gold medals. Of course we boycotted the 1980 Olympics. But from '84 to '00 I watched Olympic boxing. I even watched the trials. When American fighters fought, it was on the mainstream coverage.

From '04 on the coverage was shit. That's when they started spreading the Olympics out over different channels. And then when they announced that they were letting professional boxers compete , I lost interest completely.
