Meldrick Taylor v Floyd Mayweather Jr

Discussion in 'Mythical Matchups' started by Rich ´Money´ Mustard, Feb 21, 2018.

  1. What makes Mel Taylor tougher than Floyd when Floyd has never been even dropped much less stopped?

  2. Who's tougher: Floyd Mayweather or Muhammad Ali?

    And why?

I am with D&M on this one.

Toughness in boxing is about the ability to face adversity, to retain composure, sometimes to change tactics during the fight, sometimes to keep doing what you are doing. In short, to do what it is takes to win.

Toughness is not pulling a Mayorga, fighting foolishly and suffering as much as possible

  4. The two fights that first showed Muhammad Ali was tough were Frazier I and Norton I: both fights he endured punishment and physical damage and lost.

  5. I've never seen Hagler take a beating. I've seen Gatti take beatings and come back and win. Was Gatti tougher than Hagler?

  6. Toughness isn't just based on just one of those criteria though.

    And Mayweather doesn't fit either.

  7. Ok buddy have it your way.

From my perspective, however, if a guy goes 50 fights with approx 30 of those being championship fight...without so much as being dropped much less stopped or even close to being stopped...I have to assume that he’s tough especially as he fought many punchers (maidana, Pacquiao, corrales, de la Hoya, Canelo, Judah).

Meldrick taylor has been stopped a few times. I don’t see how anyone can claim Taylor is tougher unless the definition of “tough” has evolved over The years

I didn't see anything that suggested he wasn't. He got hit much less than Taylor but that shouldn't be held against him, the few times he was hit and hurt he got right back into the fray and fought fire with fire. I don't think Floyd is the best ever and I think he's overrated in terms of his standing in history but there's never been a point where I questioned his toughness. He's a hard little bastard.

Ali and Taylor is a bad toughness comparison. Ali had a cast iron chin... Taylor did not.

I rarely, rarely take Sly's side, but you guys are being a lil ridiculous about Floyd.

You can argue Taylor being "tougher" all you want, what can't be argued is that Taylor didn't have the ring IQ to match his physical talent, and Floyd did. And Floyd was still very offensive minded at 140, cause wasn't fighting bigger men.

Is anyone..."anyone" arguing that taylor had a higher ring iq than pbf? No. Sly said pbf was tougher than taylor. You agree with him?

How are we measuring "toughness"? By the Chavez fight? It's admirable that Taylor took all that punishment and continued fighting, but had he actually utilized more movement instead of trading with Chavez all night, he would have won the fight.

If we're measuring toughness by chin, then unfortunately, Sly is right. Floyd had the much better chin of the two.

  13. Possessing a good chin is indicative of 'toughness'?

  14. of course.

    What's your definition?

  15. Sure, because teak-tough-chinned guys never get stopped with bodyshot attacks, right?
Boxing history is littered with guys posessing great chins that got stopped before 12.

(Mayweather, by the way, has never shown he has a ´great chin´)

The bit about movement is totally beside the point.

As far as your other question, if toughness is the same thing as chin, I would have to wonder why Sly didn't just say, "pbf has a better chin." Neither guy is famous for his chin - Taylor was stopped several times and PBF fought in a style that avoided contact and dictated which gloves his opponents could wear. So even if he is talking about chin, pbf's is only marginally better at best.

  17. Firstly: If not chin, then what else is indicative of toughness?
Secondly: How is PBF's chin only marginally better? LOL! Having a style that avoids punishment doesn't suddenly mean you have a bad chin?! What rubbish is this? lol

Pbf was badly wobbled by Corley and hurt by Mosley who didn't knock anyone good out at 147. Also, pbf barred maidana from wearing puncher's gloves, and pussed out against odh and pacquiao.

  20. You're wasting your time against the Mayweather Uber-troll.
Every possible angle that can be loopholed in some small way, he'll have a pre-prepared a ridiculously outrageous answer for.

    Mosley stopped marg at 147.

  22. You’re trying hard. Mosley knocked out solid chinned Margarito in the fight just before Floyd. He was stunned against Corley but it’s not like he was close to being stopped like you’re pretending

I think Floyd wins this one. Smarter, more skilled, much sharper defensively. Taylor would give Floyd a good fight and outwork him to win about 4 of the 12 rounds.
