"Biggest", "most significant"... that's Star Wars more than almost any film ever in any decade

I thought we were rating works of art not their popularity or receipts

  2. Possibly but then ironically Star Wars is my personal favourite of the entire series (probably a bit of nostalgia, the fact it was the first abd also because it's by far, the most quoted in the series).

The rest of the series I find hard to watch any of now.
I've always agreed that Star Wars should have been a standalone movie.

It's ironic for boxing fan to say this but... Rocky might be the most overrated movie of the 70s. The fact that it won Best Picture over Network and Taxi Driver is laughable.

Weird... granted I still think it's the second best of them with a huge drop off to the third but to me ESB is a more sophisticated story ... I think Alec Guinness does a ton of the heavy lifting in the first one, covering up a lot of the film's holes

Agree... it's an excellent feel good movie but that's a terrible award selection ... I don't think it even deserved nomination

Marathon Man, Josey Wales ... just two films of 1976 not nominated that are clearly better off the top of my head

Oh man ... that's fucking hilarious

  9. In his 1997 memoir A Positively Final Appearance, Sir Alec Guiness told of meeting a young Star Wars fan (black, big-teeth, over-excitable) who said he had watched it 100 times.
To the disgust of the boy’s mother, the grand actor said: “Well, that's very silly so do you think you could promise never to see Star Wars again?”

The lad burst into tears, utterly crushed"

I'm gonna take a wild guess that that isn't exactly true

  11. Yes, true. story.
Guiness disliked Star Wars and its fans even more.

    Rocky
    Apocalypse Now
    Godfather

Close Encounters of the Third Kind wasn't nominated as Best Picture in 1977, but Spielberg got his first nomination as director. Neither Saturday Night Fever nor Sorcerer nor The Duelists were nominated for Best Picture, but forgettable films like "Julia", "The Turning Point" (can you believe it got 11 nominations??) and a good but not great comedy "The Goodbye Girl" all were Best Picture candidates. Don't get me started with the winner, Annie Hall.
