Wilder has shocking power. True one punch power. Lots of snap. He could drop ANY heavyweight; past or present

Wilder though is a very limited fighter. He’s basically a bum with power. However with that much power (and hand speed to go with it) it almost doesn’t matter how limited you are

His reach pretty much guarantees that he will land that right hand at some point, unless you take him out before he has a chance. You could be shutting him out but if he lands that shot flush, you're fucked.

A bum with power is accurate, but yes, his power is shocking.

Given AJ's questionable chin... we're looking at a pick em.

yeah, his power is stunning. Seems as good as pretty much anybody in history. I think this fight putted to rest the discussion about his power that some had not long ago

I agree with all of this. With that power it doesn't matter if you have little traditional skil, since the only strategy that makes sense to you is to try to find room for the bomb. Firing it over and over increases the possibility that eventually it lands

Wilder showed a lot of limitation tonight. I think it has a lot to do with Ortiz southpaw stance. he also looked horrible against Southpaw Polish bum before nearly killing him

AgREED with the consensus. The fight went exactly as I said it would for the precise reasons I said it would. Ortiz is, and always was, a 'better' boxer but Wilder can punch like a motherfucker and, in a sport where the objective is to knock the other person unconscious with punches, being able to hit with ferocious power is arguably more important than being a skilled boxer.

I'm starting to think that Wilder beats Joshua. Joshua would probably be up by about seven points when Wilder finally lands the bomb, but when he does, I don't think AJ gets up from it.

That was a very good win for Wilder. His signature win. That power really is frightening. AJ-Wilder is going to be fascinating.

Wilder vs Joshua is definitely a pick’em at this point.

Joshua is a much better fighter and if he has wilder hurt the way Ortiz did, Joshua would finish him there and then. But wilder has that equalizer and just takes one punch for him to turn the fight on its head.

Anything can happen between them and in any round. Joshua could come out and blow him away in a complete mismatch and wilder could be behind in every single round and on the verge of being stopped and suddenly unleash “Tsar Bomba” and it’s a different fight if not the end of the fight.

Fascinating and I’ll be shaking like a leaf with adrenaline when I’m watching it

Wilder showed impressive power and heart. I'll give him that.

But he's extremely flawed. I think AJ should be able to beat him. Keyword SHOULD... AJ is the better fighter, but Ortiz is also a better fighter than Wilder. Sometimes that equalizer can change things in a fight. And it did last night.

I still pick AJ, gun to my head. But it's no certainty.

Looking at round 7 again.....Wilder was lucky that this happened in the last 20s of the round. He would have been stopped if there were 30 more seconds.

Also, one thing Wilder did better than Ortiz was hold when he was hurt. Ortiz didn't hold once.

How successful would Wilder have been if he fought EXACTLY like his trainer Mark Breland because they have a similar frame

Breland Said it Best, “Being Wild WORKS for Deontay Wilder”...

Breland’s Making SUBTLE Changes Without Sacrificing WHO Wilder Is...The 1-2 Looks TIGHTER Each Fight and his Balance Continues to Improve...

Boxing ISNT Paint By Number...Guys Come In All Shapes, Sizes and Lengths...Given Wilder’s Height, Length, Athleticism and Power, Being WILD Works...

If He Tried to Be Mark Breland 2.0, He’d Have 1-2 Losses by Now and WOULDN’T Have an 8 Figure Payday in his Immediate Future...

This. In boxing, more than almost any individual sport, you have to create the style and tactics according to the abilities of the fighter in question.

Just like you don't make a 6'2 guy the center of your basketball team, you don't want Wilder to boxtoo carefully

Wilder looks like shit, and he's as wild as fuck, with so many fundamental flaws you expect him to lose often. But he has that big equaliser, and sometimes, fighters who look like crap somehow prove very difficult to beat because they just play to their strengths. Carl Froch was another recent example of a guy who did just about everything wrong but proved to be a very effective fighter.

As boxing 'hardcore fans', most of us like to see the protagonists demonstrate their skills - the 'sweet science' and all that. Sometimes you have to remind yourself that, actually, the aim of the game is to knock the other guy the fuck out, and if that is done effectively, not much else matters.

The aim of the game is indeed to knock the other guy out BEFORE he does the same to you, and this is where skills make the difference.

In Wilders defence, Joshua is really just a very slightly more refined version, in that Joshua really isn't all that skilled either.

Neither of them is a bum, neither of them knows shit about boxing like Joe Walcott did either.

You can’t compare Wilder’s skills to Joshua’s. Joshua has good balance and puts his combinations together in a professional manner. Offensively Joshua is textbook. None of his punches are wild. wilder looks like he’s swinging frying pans in there. He looks like a bar room brawler. Doesn’t matter though, as we’ve been saying, because when you have that type of power and speed to deliver it AND you carry that power late into a fight, It can bail you out of any trouble that your lack of skills got you into

Joshua is more refined, WITHOUT the freakish power. Joshua is a good puncher, with solid technique, but it's not the devastating one shot ability Wilder has.

It's funny because in matchups like this, it usually bodes better for the more skilled guy the longer it lasts. But in Joshua-Wilder, AJ had better ice Wilder quickly. The longer it goes, the greater the probability that Wilder lands the kill shot.

Irish is trying to say that Joshua ain't exactly Carlos Monzon as a technician, and he's right.

Joshua is stiff, robotic and hittable.

That's the key point. He is hittable and against his two best opponents, old Wlad and Povetkin victim Takam............he took a lot and his power took a lot longer to tell.

Wlad yeah, but Takam's success has been massively overstated for some reason. Takam just made it awkward, he lost every round and the only success he had was due to a clash of heads. I don't get why that fight keeps getting brought up.

I think AJ would find Wilder easier to hit flush than both Takam and Wlad. Wilder defensively is laughably wide open and he doesn't possess the jab to keep AJ thinking the way Wlad was able to.

But I do agree with X about AJ needing to take out Wilder early. The sooner the better.

In truth though, Ortiz really should have won that fight. He failed to finish off a dead man in front of him. I'm sure age played a role. Truly a case of the better fighter losing. But that's why I think boxing is the greatest sport in the world along with futbol/football/soccer. Both sports present those intangibles were just about anything can happen. And even though I'm far from a Wilder fan, him winning that fight proves it true.
