Biggest disappointments ever

Basically, the fighters you had high hopes for and didn't amount to anything.

Most recently, Felix Verdejo is a good example. Early on he appeared to have potential but as his level of comp rose, it was apparent that he was quite average, but looking back at his earlier performances, it's apparent he was never anything special.

Howard Davis is a guy that I've read about and he apparently appeared to be headed to great things before his setbacks.

    Whom else?

Pavlik. I remember thinking this kid is going places. Those places turned out to be bars and liquor stores.

Definitely two names that spring to mind.

Jose Luis Lopez is another. Very talented guy. Just didn't care.

Pavlik UNDERACHIEVED For Certain, But “Disappointment” is Extreme...

He Won and DEFENDED the Middleweight Championship of the World, Headlined at Least 2 PPV’s & Only Lost to Legends and/or Lb for Lb’ders, if REED’s Not Mistaken...

Not the Career it COULD Have Been, But Not “Disappointing” Either, Necessarily...

Ray Leonard was America's sweetheart after the Olympics but it was definitely Davis who was expected to be the can't miss legend of the group... he was a good fighter but he seemed to lack power, his chin wasn't the best and he was also just plain unlucky ... in today's climate of 80 titles per weight class and diminished quality, he'd likely win several trinkets but in the late 70s and 80s it just wasn't in the cards for him ... considering the team he was part of and the hype around him, he's one of the big disappointments of all time... I don't think anybody predicted Leo Randolph would win a title but not Howard Davis

Mark Breland had a better career but he was another guy hyped to impossible heights... some thought he'd be the next Ray ROBINSON, never mind Leonard

Dominick Guinn. Lol this guy was the next great American heavyweight for a couple months. Main eventing HBO and shit. Why the hype? He ko'ed the previous next great American heavyweight Michael Grant.

  8. Good ones. Mark Breland also from back in the day.

  9. Pavlik overachieved IMO. I always saw him as a limited, one-two fighter with power and decent chin. He was never going to dominate.

    REED beat me to it.

Bojado looked like a future superstar in his first 10 fights. But the lazy fuck was allergic to training hard.

Joan Guzman. Whatever happened to that guy?

  12. Good one.

Dominicans, for some reason, can't cut it in boxing.

Yeah, Williams never blew me away either. He had nice handspeed, but he couldn't crack an egg and he wasn't hard to find. I definitely didn't see big time potential in him back then.

Essentially, he looked like a much LESS talented Judah.

Michael Nunn definitely comes to mind. He had the talent and skills to be one of the greatest middleweights of all time.

Breland's the Perfect Example of the DIFFERENCE in Amateur and Pro Boxing...

Next to Impossible to Beat a Rangy, 6'2 Welterweight with a Quality Jab-Right Cross, in a 3-4 Round Fight. Thus, Breland's 110-1 Record...

But Remove the Head Gear and Some of the Padding from the Gloves, ADD More Rounds and it's an Entirely Different Ballgame...

"Moving the Goal Posts", as they Say...

I'm kinda glad Nunn didn't reach legendary status because he was an annoying looking motherfucker with those fucking eyebrows and that smirk

  20. I'm the biggest Nunn fan. GREAT GREAT talent. The way he moved and punched.....effortless.

Exactly ... Breland's principal issues were durability and stamina, which are hard things to expose as an opponent when you've only got a few minutes and there's headgear and softer gloves ... he had all the Xs and Os covered, all the right tools and techniques and physical attributes to make him a big threat ... fast hands, easy power in both hands, crazy reach, etc. but he would visibly start to fade after a while even in fights he was winning easily and he was not sturdy in his frame, looked like he needed to gain 30 pounds ... that's what did him in

I liked Nunn too. Really natural talent. But very skilled too. He is probably the reason SRL moved down from 160.

You're selling Pavlik short. He had his limitations for sure, but he was an extremely talented offensive fighter.

Never would have been an ATG, but his prime definitely would have lasted longer w/o the booze.

I maintain that prime Pavlik beats the living shit outta Clenelo.

It's a shame Verdejo sucks. No homo, the kid certainly had the matinee idol looks to becomw PR's next star.

Nah. You can't expect a guy to go far in boxing if he's unfamiliar with the concept of jabbing . Tua overachieved.

Tua was in the wrong era. Today he'd be a star.

I'd pick prime Tua to put AJ and Wilder under dirt.
