Anthony Joshua vs. Michael Moorer

His punching power in MM's is becoming more extraordinary with every passing day. What makes it all the more remarkable is that he doesn't actually punch that hard, for a guy of his size and compared to other actual, real hard-punching HW's in history.

I argued on the Bowe-Joshua thread a while ago that there's no proof that AJ has more power than Bowe, and Sly thought it was outrageous.

At this point, it's pretty obvious that Bowe was a much bigger hitter than AJ.

I don't think it is obvious at all. I'd rank them as fairly similar punchers, though it is all guessing too.

Bowe didn't have that many big-name KO victims either and had to land like 200 clean shots to finally crumble Gonzalez, for example.

I do agree that Bowe probably was better in producing KOs since he was the better combination puncher

 

That I agree with, but heavyweight bouts are not p4p fights. Joshua's power in absolute sense is enough to knock Moorer out and that is what matters here

This is the basis of our whole disagreement here, really. I find laws of physics as much more vital in boxing than you do, whereas you stress the meaning of skill.

IMO Foreman or Lyle were not smooth boxers considering their success (though they are underrated in that sense). Physics had a lot to do with their careers. Same with Parker, though I am not claiming he was that good or anywhere close to it

Or, if you want to get nosy, do the weight classes exist so that they protect the fatsos from featherweight's, who are much smoother and thus better?

 

Kinda with Ugo here, people go to extremes if a contemporary fighter has a bad day at the office.

 

Ali was one of the toughest Heavyweights in history. His toughness is actually what lead to his condition: he took too much punishment when he slowed down in the late 70s.. Also Ali was of a decent natural size and had the reach and the style (in the 60s especially) to be able to avoid punishment. AJ wouldn't have stopped Ali.

Frazier matched up well with Ali, but he wouldn't match up well with AJ. 70s Ali was a stationary target with mediocre power and as such Frazier could find him and wouldn't be deterred in his attack. AJ however would DWARF Frazier although he wouldn't dwarf ali as badly.

An analogy is Leonard, Hearns, Duran. Not an exact one...but it's apt to a point. Leonard was bigger than Duran but didn't dwarf him. Leonard's power was decent but not one punch. As such Leonard couldn't successfully keep Duran off him in that first fight and even the second fight wasn't a mismatch. Hearns was bigger than Leonard but didn't dwarf him, Leonard had enough height and reach to be relatively competitive with Hearns..although he was losing the fight. Hearns DWARFED Duran however. You see although Leonard didn't dwarf Duran and Hearns didn't dwarf Leonard the difference between Hearns and Duran was VAST. That's simple science and mathematics: 10 isn't much more than 7 and 14 isn't that much more than 10 but 14 is TWICE as much as 7. Hearns was too big and too powerful for Duran. Aj would be too big and too powerful for Frazier.

 

If Moorer were half a foot shorter and 100 pounds lighter this might mean something

As it is he's 20 pounds lighter (he doesn't have lovehandles) and like 2 inches shorter

 

Moorer would befuddle Palooka Parker, no doubt about it

 

There is much doubt actually. Moorer went life and death with Cooper and was knocked out by old Foreman. Parker is a big Heavyweight with a solid chin and fast hands.

 

Parker is a non puncher. I don't think he has the power to one punch hurt Moorer

 

I agree, but he has teh chin to withstand the bombs and enough power to hurt Moorer eventually.

Terrible analogy. Tommy Hearns was a great fighter. AJ is nothing but a juiced, pretty boy oaf.
