Forest Gump is absolute pap. I cannot stand it. How it beat Shawshank and Pulp Fiction to the Best Picture Oscar I will never know. Shawshank, on the other hand, is a magnificent film. MTF
It's pretty simple how it beat out both for Best Picture - popularity and safety. Shawshank was NOT a box office hit when it first came out... Gump was. Gump was the highest grossing movie of the entire year, if I'm not mistaken. Not a lot of people went to see Shawshank in theatres. It wasn't until it came out on VHS that it became a huge hit. And Gump beat out Pulp Fiction simply because it was a safe, harmless, feel good movie. A movie like Pulp had never been done before, and it damn sure isn't a "safe" and "feel good" movie. Well, it is a feel good movie for film buffs... but not for kids and old people. Gump was an endearing family movie starring a retard, and Tom Hanks at the time was one of the biggest stars in Hollywood. It was guaranteed to win an Oscar.
Actually, Gump is probably a little too violent to be considered a family movie. But it is a nostalgia movie that appeals to old folks... old folks that didn't "get" Pulp Fiction at the time.
