Gimme a single notable critic that list Halloween among her/his top 100 all time films

Or else WHAT IS THE POINT OF THE THREAD? Why did you emphasize "great"?

When someone says "the great films", I assume they mean ones critics regard as masterpieces or extremely substantial ... not fucking Halloween

Your argument holds no weight unless you wanna tell us that the horror genre doesn't exist in the realm of other movie genres.

Halloween is universally considered a consensus top 5-10 all time horror CLASSIC, therefore... it's a goddamn classic!

WTF does the AFI list mean if it has goddamn SIXTH SENSE as one of the top 100 all time movies???

    "The great" films

Halloween is on no such lists

The sixth sense made that list I suspect because it was hugely popular when the list was compiled

Where's Halloween or anything remotely like Halloween on there?

Of the AFI list mentioned earlier in the thread, the following should not be included:

    Star Wars
    Sound of Music
    Lord of the Rings
    Saving Private Ryan
    Forrest Gump
    Silence of the Lambs
    The Sixth Sense

    And Schindlers List ridiculously high

Star Wars and ESB are clearly classic, great movies. What knock can you really make against them besides trying to look hip 40 years after the fact?

SOTL and SPR are both EASILY top 100 all time movies. Both are masterpieces.

    I agree with the rest.

AFI also doesn't seem to realize that movies have been made since 1999.

Of movies made in the last 15 years, No Country and There Will Be Blood are certainly among the top 100 all time greats.

It seems a bit pretentious to put TWBB above Star Wars and to call out Star Wars as the film that doesn’t belong when there’s so much unwatchable old garbage on that list.

Maybe it’s not intellectual or artsy fartsy but there’s no movie on that list that has remained as watchable or been rewatched as much as SW and ESB.

Is this like some sort of reactionary populist troll or something? The other posters are too "hip" so now you're gonna go flying in the opposite direction to balance the scales?

Asides from being pretentious what argument is there that Star Wars and ESB aren’t great films? They weren’t just hugely popular when they came out, they’ve remained hugely popular for decades. Not on reputation but based on people still watching and enjoying them.

It has some of the most iconic and memorable characters, quotes and scenes in the history of film.

How can you give props to these old movies that people can’t even sit through based on what they were when they came out and now give props to Star Wars which has sustained itself for 40 years?

Almost all of them lol. There’s only a handful of movies from before the 70’s that are actually still watchable, and only a slightly larger handful f I’m the 70’s.

It says a lot about Star Wars that a movie with so much outdated sfx has aged so much better than these blocks of wooden dialogue they call classics.

    Ummm....I dunno about that.
I think it really all depends on how much of a movie-buff you are.
I can list tons of movies from 1940-1970 that I can still watch today.

    e.g.

    I´m watching this right now!

If you have to be a movie buff to sit through a movie it says something. Old movies can be interesting in a historical, nostalgic way but if someone isn’t interested in that angle and the movie can’t hold interest than it’s just an old movie.

There are good movies that turn into classics of certain genres mainly because those genres are loaded with shitty films. Then there are the undisputed great films that keep popping up in every critics best of all time lists. Films that were awesome upon their release and continue being awesome decades later.

The Graduate is waaaayy overrated. Good film, don't get me wrong, but the greatest American film ever made?? Give me a fucking break, Mrs Robinson! Everybody knows that distinction belongs to...

Halloween is clearly regarded as a ground-breaking film and I've seen it on many lists.
