Both excellent films, which is better? I give the edge to AHOV. One of the most underrated movies of the 00s.
Both films stars Viggo Mortessen and both were directed by David Cronenberg and both are great. Hard pick, but I'll go with AHOV because it felt like a modern Western due to its graphic novel origins.
I like "Eastern Promises" more. Having read the graphic novel years before, I was a bit disappointed in "History of Violence". Found it a little clunky in the plot.
Like Panchy said, it came out in 07... which was a rough year for any edgy crime drama like Eastern Promises to drop, because you had No Country come out at that same year, as well as TWBB and Zodiac. Each one of those three films is considered by most critics as masterpieces. So yeah, Eastern Promises kinda got lost in the fray, but it's an excellent movie.
Never saw either ... since Cronenberg directed them, are there numerous nauseating scenes of melting, tearing flesh or a toothy vagina growing on some person's neck?
LOL, no. Both are somewhat graphic in their own way, but relatively tame on the Cronenberg scale. I don't think you'd guess he made either one, if you didn't already know.
The best scene in A History of Violence? Maria Bello's full frontal nudity...pubic hair never looked so casually great on film in a non-sex scene.
