Overrated: Will Smith: Far and away, the most overrated actor that ever lived. Will Smith is a fucking HORRIBLE actor, and I've always said as much. He's Hollywood's darling though, and I've never heard critics utter a single bad word about him. Johnny Depp: Extremely overrated. He does have some acting talent, but not a fraction as much talent as he's always been hyped to have. At no point was he was one of the world's best actors. Matt Damon: Save for a few decent performances, Matt Damon can't act for shit. Sean Penn: He's better than anyone I've listed thus far, but he's still very overrated as an actor. Underrated: John Turturro: A truly great actor who never became a big mainstream name, probably because he doesn't have Hollywood looks. Woody Harrelson: Probably underrated because he's famous for two things - Cheers and White Men Can't Jump. Not enough people realize that he's a goddamn fine actor. Michael Shannon: He's definitely become a pretty big name in Hollywood and is starting to get his just due. Excellent actor. Others?
Sean Penn is an absolutely unbearable cunt of a person but I think he's a great actor Tom Cruise is obviously overrated... he barely manages to appear human at his very best George Clooney is a dreadful actor for someone so famed Leo DiCaprio is a solid actor that often looks like a boy in an adult's clothing who has been promoted as a "great actor" for so long that many people don't even question it despite its being untrue On the flip side... Stacy Keach is nowhere near as famous as he deserved to be ... terrific actor Warren Oates was brilliant and is often forgotten today Willem Dafoe got the kiss of death (best supporting actor) which deprived audiences of seeing him in good movies... instead he's often had to chew scenery in bad ones
Clooney isn't a dreadful actor. He's above average, but far from great. A dreadful actor is someone like Paul Walker or Patrick Dempsey. Thing is, nobody ever considers Clooney an acting great... he's a movie star, but more based on his looks than ability. People understand that.
Bullshit... he's got all kinds of clout in Hollywood and has won or been nominated for awards ... he gets treated with respect his performance hasn't earned
You might be right, I just never really hear him get mentioned with the greats. You make a good point with Leo. Mind you, I'm a big Leo FAN... but people do get carried away about his ability. For instance, people comparing him to DeNiro because he's basically become Marty Scorsese's DeNiro replacement as a consistent leading man in his films. It's a bad comparison, because Leo is nowhere remotely close to a DeNiro, or Pacino level as an actor. Leo is closer to being a rich man's Matt Damon than a poor man's DeNiro. We can add Charlton Heston to the all time overrated list. That fuckin OVERactor.
