The two (post-Jaws) monster blockbusters of the mid-70s:

One, basically a movie based on a load of other ideas stolen by a one-trick-pony of a Director, made for 6-18 yr old boys, and gained insurmountable momentum when backed by a massive merchandising campaign, and bizarrely, still reverred by men in their 40s trying to re-capture their youth versus....a really original, smart, still-watchable science-fiction movie with great acting, great pacing, great direction and awesome special effects.

    But who takes it?

    As a child, Star Wars

As a 40 year old man, clearly Close Encounters

I dunno....when I watched CE3K, it totally changed my opinion about Star Wars, which, for the moment I was aware of it for about a year or so, nothing else mattered.

It's a difficult comparison...the films are so different. I love both but for different reasons. I have to give it to Star Wars though.

As much as I love the original 1977 'Star Wars' (the most fun me & hundreds of strangers had at a packed movie theater...ever!), when I watched that same year 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' it was the closest thing I had to a religious experience. It blew my mind. I became obsessed with the UFO phenomenon, devoured books about the subject, etc. After I outgrew that phase, I just plain enjoyed it as a masterful piece of cinema. IMO Steven Spielberg's best film. Heck, I even went to a movie theater hundreds of miles away to watch the 40th anniversary re-release last year. Even though it has dated bad (70's clothes and other stuff), the film remains as powerful as it did back on the day.

    Yes, CE3K is better.

( but I am still pissed Spielberg never gave us his promised 'Close Encounters of the Fourth Kind')

Close Encounters even though agreeing with Panchy will force me to reassess my life choices.

    I didn’t want to disappoint.

Seriously though I’m not one of those people that try to impress others by pretending I’m only into mature themes. If I like something I like it and if it’s childish or silly who cares ?

Star Wars may be catered more for kids but it was a very enjoyable film with memorable characters and sequences. There’s a reason why that franchise turned into a phenomenon

Yeah, two reasons: gullibility and stupidity.
