SOLO Bombs at the box office

The soy is strong with this one...there is no one smiling or celebrating today at Disney/Lucasfilm. The up til now failure-proof Star Wars franchise has scored its first box office dud and its performance has been so bad it might not even recoup its investment. Solo: A Star Wars Story while it got mostly passing grades reviews from critics, it was met with apathy by audiences. Scoring waaay below its industry expectations of $170 million (which by Wednesday was lowered to $130 million) with an anemic three day $83.3 million it could end up with a four day holiday total of $100-$103 million...a far cry from the record shattering openings of prior Star Wars films. You might think that foreign audiences will save this film. Wrong. It grossed only $65 million internationally for a worldwide current of $148 million! These numbers are similar to those of 'Justice League" and we know that film didn't set the world on fire. With a speculated budget ranging from $250-300 million plus over $100 million more in marketing, if this film ends its run with less than $900 million worldwide, it will end up losing money...big time!

Media analysts are trying to figure out what happened: some blame it on opening so close to Deadpool 2 (which came in second this week with a solid $42.7 million for a current 10 days domestic total of $207 million) and Avengers: Infinity War (third place with $16.4 million for a current domestic total of $621 million which by today will beat the first The Avengers film record); others think its the beginning of Star Wars fatigue as this is the fourth franchise film in four straight years and audiences don't view them as special anymore; others think it was a mistake to have 'Solo' opening on Memorial Day which in the past few years have not been a good weekend for big budget Disney films and just a mere five months after the release of the last Star Wars film...and only a small fraction are pointing out that longtime fans felt betrayed by Disney/Lucasfilm with the treatment of 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi" and decided to not support this 'pansexual Lando' film as a sign of rebellion.

I hope Disney suits pay attention to the last explanation and remove sjw Kathleen Kennedy from Lucasfilm. Otherwise they will face again the wrath of the Fandom Menace!

In the fourth spot the elderly chick-flick Book Club benefitted from the 'Solo' boycott and added $9.4 million for a two weeks current $31 million. Not bad for a bunch of geriatric past their box office prime ladies.

Finally in the fifth spot Life of the Party took home $5.1 million for a current $39 million.

The sad thing is, it's probably not a bad film. I think this is backlash for The Last Jedi. Rian Johnson and Kathleen Kennedy are to blame for this not Ron Howard.

I read that the film is watchable and Ron Howard, who came on board when Lord & Miller were fired through mid-filming, was hired merely to complete the film in a cohesive manner. So this will rank very low among Howards films as he was just trying to save an already doomed project. And yes, everybody blames Kennedy for this fiasco...except Disney.

 

Is the opposite: L3-37, now considered THE worst SW character ever, even worst than Rose Tico, is a female droid that apparently is Lando's literal object of affection. And she is portrayed as a feminist sjw parody which whether intentional or not has offended many real sjw (residuals from Lord & Miller and probably the cause they got fired??).

 

If a movie costs a Billion dollars to make and it doesn't make a billion dollars back, it's not a bomb if millions of people still go and see it. It's just bad management and fiscal irresponsibility from the get go.

Yeah, I guess, but this is our future now. What people don't realize is, these franchises and the companies that run these franchises don't really care deep down if they make money or not. They are not from small studios, they are huge conglomerates. They make money great, they don't make money, they are a corporate write-off and an expensive commercial for the studio/umbrella company.

Sure, heads will roll if it's a failure, headlines will be made, but that's all just part of the process.

A tiny part of me wanted these new "Star Wars" movies to be good, to make up for the previous trilogy of George Lucas abortions, but from what I have seen, they are worse. Not because they are badly made, but because they are completely "average" and safe. They are competent but completely forgettable. Like they have been focused grouped to within an inch of their life. Just like every fucking Avengers movie ever made.
