1. Both movies have ensemble casts, multipe plots, interspersed stories, 3+hrs long:

I'll be very honest... I've never seen either.

  3. Do yourself a favor: watch both, chronological order.
    You won´t be disappointed.

I will. I'll make an effort to watch Short Cuts in the next week.

    Mostarda,

I recently watched both. Well, I lied, I HAD seen Magnolia when it first came out... just didn't remember it.

Short Cuts I watched last week.

I'd say Short Cuts was the better movie, and that Magnolia borrowed a lot from it.

    You agree?

Never been much of an Altman fan. A lot of his movies seemed like not much more then an excuse to get a bunch of big names actors to work for scale. A bunch of scenes, but not much in the way of a movie. Still better then Woody Allen's similar attempts at the same thing, however.

Paul Thomas Anderson was likely influenced by Altman, but I think he's an improvement on the model. Better narrative flow and more compelling to me.

Magnolia was boring, to me... a movie trying to make you realize how "heavy" it is... I feel that way about every PTA film I've seen with the possible exception of Boogie Nights which I thought was good

Watching "Magnolia" was, for me a bit like reading Infinite Jest

Obviously not a chore on the same level as that but something I went into after hearing rave after rave

Of course, I actually finished watching Magnolia... I put down Infinite Jest on like page 450 and never got around to picking it back up

I don't think Magnolia is a top 3 PTA film.

There Will Be Blood, The Master, and Boogie Nights are three A-class films... TWBB will be remembered as a cinematic classic... whether you like it or not.

Boogie Nights is one of the best movies of the late 90s.

And The Master is one of the best movies of the 2010s.

You're like the only movie buff I've ever heard who doesn't like TWBB.

Ironically, I re-watched for like the 20th time on Saturday. It's a fucking amazing film... no film made since has been as good.

The Master is a great movie also, but it never became mainstream because its a satire of scientology... and we all know how much Hollywood loves its scientology.

Ya know, you're treating my good friend PTA very unfairly. Very unfairly. There Will Be Blood exposes how greed and corruption can destroy a man, or in the case of crooked Hillary, a woman. That fact that you can't see it's genius.. SAD!

  16. Yeah.
    Short Cuts is better.
    Altman is better than Anderson.
    Boogie Nights is awesome.
There Will Be Blood is wank based on my earlier, different thread reasoning.

Lol @ TWBB being wank. Fuck is wrong with you cunts???

In any case, my favorite Altman movie is The Long Goodbye.

    i like PTA.

Wes Anderson i find ridiculous at times. Although he has made a few good movies.

And of course many confuse them both with Paul w.s. Anderson, who is straight garbage.

Rushmore was ok, I chuckled here and there but I just find his whole aesthetic hard to take; the overtly quirky snark ... when a director's alter-ego is Owen Wilson, shit gets old fast

I just looked up Paul WS Anderson's resume. Jeeyyyyysssssus Christ what a horrible track record! How does this guy keep getting work???? Literally the ONLY movie he's ever made that's not crap is Event Horizon... and even Event Horizon isn't a great flick. It's good though... a lot better than its low RT score.

When Event Horizon is your magnum opus... you should probably quit directing.

STILL better than Michael Bay though! Event Horizon is better than anything Bay has ever made.

When you put out shit like that, Event Horizon is like 2001 Space Odyssey by comparison.

    That's a joke, right?

Bad Boys is one of the worst cop movies ever made. Its unwatchable now.

  29. With two of the unfunniest, punchable cunts ever to appear in a movie.

It's crazy to consider this now, but in 95 when Bad Boys came out, Martin was a bigger star than Smith.
