With Inter and Porto, his approach worked because he had functional sides, a squad that could buy into his overbearing tactical discipline and what was essentially anti-football... few huge stars, just players good enough to execute his plans but not so good as to bristle under his whip ... With Real Madrid, his approach failed miserably... you could've had a guy tell them "ok you guys pick a starting 11 and I'll go smoke some cigs" and they'd have ended up with the same results he got... Cristiano Ronaldo and Xabi Alonso don't do Park the Bus football... back at Chelsea, he still certainly had some big stars but he also had players like Terry who would enthusiastically embrace such a dour approach to the game... but even then it only went so far and some utterly remarkable luck was involved... since then, what has he accomplished that any other fairly well known manager couldn't? He hasn't won a CL knockout in ages... look at Man United's squad the last few years... not exactly Watford
His achievements with Porto and Inter deserve praise even if the football itself was dreadful and lifeless... only a very talented manager could achieve those ... but since then, he's needed an obscene bank account and some serious luck in the biggest European matches with Chelsea and he did absolutely nothing with Real Madrid... winning the Europa league with a club the size of Manchester United in the laughable modern world of football is almost a nothing accomplishment. If he'd won it with Everton or Athletic Bilbao, etc it'd be terrific but clubs as rich as Man United are supposed to contend for the CL, not Europa
He'd be better off managing a side like West Ham or something where his approach could galvanize them to punch above their weight but his ego means he'd never take a gig like that... he thinks he should be managing only a gigantic club
Agreed. I think his name value will bag him a few more big gigs but that has to end soon if his current rate of success doesn't improve.
Yup Ironically, making a bit of noise with a lesser side would probably get him more of the respect he insists he deserves
Yeah that's a good shout, the players he had at Chelsea in his first stint were absolutely perfect for his style, you had a bulldozer in Drogba up front, Makalele breaking things up in midfield, and players like Carvalho and Terry in defence who absolutely LOVED the dirty, defensive side of the game (as much as I hated Terry he was very good at it).
He's a dour cunt who can't drill the best out of his men once the tactics start to fail. So he can't compensate., a la Klopp, for lack of technical prowess by way of enthusiasm or personal strength of character. Once nobody is afraid of him and he cannot stink his way to victory, he therefore cannot drive his troops on to victory by other means. A creep, a negative creep, and a dour negative tactically inept creep at that.
I suspect that may have been his intention. He didn't get the bazillions he wanted to fight this campaign and now he is deliberately undermining his own team and hoping he gets fired, collects a few million quid, and fucks off into the rapidly setting Sun. That said, Lukaku, a £75m acquisition, of Mourinho, missed an absolute sitter at 0-0 which would have had a serious bearing on the game.
I can't see mourinho sabotaging himself like that or looking to fuck off out of the spotlight... I think you're way off
And yet........he has sabotaged himself. He's basically thrown half his team under the bus. Lindeloff in particular. He dropped Mata and Martial.............they weren't even on the bench. Two absolute game changers. Rashford......nowhere to be seen. That's one guaranteed starter and two PROVEN impact subs and they weren't picked.
To be fair, if he was out there being sent info of our current team he would've probably walked out of his trench into a hail of bullets saying "fuck this shit".
