David Gilmour

How do you rate him as a guitarist?

 

Dave Gilmour.

 

He was pretty good up until Animals then he got all generic...

 

I would agree with this, although he did some nice guitar work on The Wall. Still though, as a guitarist I think he had great feel and tone, didn't venture out of his comfort zone much but he didn't need to, he served the songs and at the end of the day that's all you really need.

But the first solo on "Comfortably Numb" is very good stuff and the Brick in The Wall solo is also quite good

Other than that, I'm with you

 

On the 'In The Flesh' / Animals tour in 1977, Pink Floyd management had to ask backup guitarist Snowy White (later of Thin Lizzy) to 'tone it down' as he'd occasionally show up Gilmour's inefficiencies during solos.

The 'Comfortably Numb' solo is good but the rest of the song is cack. Brick in the Wall solo is good too, I agree. I really like the Money solo.

I prefer Gilmour's sound/tone than his actual playing, 'Saucerful Of Secrets', 'Echoes'...

He plays some nice ones on Shine On as well

 

Obviously a major component and contributing factor to Pink Floyd's success and signature songs.

Never got into his solo stuff much (having acquired and listened to two of his solo albums).

Tons better guitar work here than in the Heavy Rockers' favourite, , 'Comfortably Numb.

Comfortably Numb is blooze cliche really (second solo, NOT the first)

 

I do like his sound and tone throughout that decade though.
From the early 1970s with the Hiwatt DR103 All Purpose 100W heads and Fender Twin Reverb ´silverface´ going through WEM Super Starfinder 200 cabinets and the original Peter Cornish custom-built effects board was pretty consistent.

I think he had it heavily modified for The Wall, though
