It looked to me that Hagler had to switch to knock out an opponent. He could only box in southpaw stance and could only go to war in orthodox. Unique fighter.
I don't agree. The ESPN - Showtime divide could be just as wide if not wider than HBO - Showtime seeing that ESPN has much deeper pockets. Fights the size of Lewis-Tyson and Mayweather-Pacquaio had enough money involved where both sides had no other choice but to finally make it happen. Also both happened when 3/4 of the fighters were past their primes. The longer it goes between Spence - Crawford the worse it is for Crawford seeing that he's three years older than Spence. I thought I heard on the broadcast that Crawford's next fight will be on PPV which will be a mistake. None of the guys at 147 are PPV attractions and as much as I'd want to see Spence vs. Crawford, not sure I'd spend any money to see it. Also, with Lomenchenko and Garcia, that fight will never happen no matter what Lomo demands. Can't see Arum giving in to Garcia getting a big payday based on how badly the split went. Garcia sat out two years rather than fight for Top Rank. I don't see Spence nor Crawford having that influence with either of their promotional outfits. Haymon has more incentive to keep Spence on the Showtime train. He's already got at least a years' worth of fights between him, Porter (which should be next), a mandatory defense then the Thurman fight. Spence vs Crawford could very well turn out to be today's version of Mayweather vs. Casamayor. Crawford is probably my favorite fighter at the moment with Spence right behind him. With the way Crawford fights, I think he's got a year...two max at the level he's at. He's got the skill to fight defensively but he opts out of fighting like that...which I respect. I just don't see him carrying on at this level for the next three years. His best shot at beating Spence is right now. I just don't see it coming to fruition in the near future.
When Fighters Reach a Certain Level of Importance within a Particular Stable, the Promoter is Working for Them as Much as the Fighter is Working for the Promoter...In REED's Opinion Anyways...In Most Cases the Fighter Simply DOESN'T Realize It... When Dela Got TIRED of his Opposition Being Criticized, he MADE Arum Make the Quartey Fight...As Much as Frank Warren Wanted to Keep Ricky Hatton in England, Feeding on Meh Opposition, Hatton Not Only WANTED to Fight the Best, he Wanted to Fight in the Best IN AMERICA...And it Happened...As Much as Golden Boy was AGAINST it, Canelo MADE Them Lock Erislandy Lara in for a Fight... Lomachenko is Top Rank's PRIZED Possession...From Day 1, Lomachenko's M.O. has Been LEGACY...Failing to Face Mikey Garcia, for Whatever Reason, Won't Shine Favorably for Lomachenko, Especially Knowing Loma Would Call EVERY Shot in the Negotiation...Mikey's Not Even Signed w/Haymon Technically, they Work on a Fight by Fight Basis w/Richard Schaefer Promoting...Easy Fight to Make in that Respect... Bottom Line, if Loma REALLY Wants to Fight Mikey, it Can Happen...He's Just Got to Be Willing to Tell Arum His Own Legacy is MORE Important than Bob's GRUDGE Against Mikey... Al Haymon is More PLIABLE than People Realize...He's Loaned Out his Guys to Rival Promotions Before, When the Rival was in a More FAVORABLE Position...Given their Status in Sports, ESPN's in a Much Better Position to HOST a Spence-Crawford PPV, than Showtime...But the DEPTH of Haymon's Roster Would Have to Be Considered for Future Endeavors, Obviously... Didn't SOUND Like he Was REALLY Interested the Other Day, but if Crawford WANTS Spence Bad Enough, REED Thinks it Could Happen... High Profile Fighters Have Got to Be Willing to Put Their Promoters on the Spot, Publicly AND Privately, if/when They're Taking it Up the Ass for Shitty Moves the Promoter is Making...Case in Point, Anthony Joshua... REED
Crawford's Not Some Mindless, 3rd World, Face-First, Diaperweight Brawler, but Let's NOT Pretend he's a "Cutey" Either... REED
Couple things. Which of the 3 fighters of the 4 was still in his prime? Lewis? Though Crawford will be older and may decline some, if the fight happens at 147 then you have to figure spence would be killing himself weight wise to stay there another 3 years Lastly, you re one cheap fuck if you dont order a spence Crawford ppv
I agree with what you're saying in theory "however" you can't compare the status of Crawford and Spence to that of De La Hoya by the time he directed Arum to make the Quartey fight. He was already a solidified PPV star by that point. Crawford and Spence don't have a fraction of the popularity or fanbase DLH had. I'd argue Lomo has more juice with Top Rank than Crawford.
Fair point about Spence outgrowing 147 as time goes on. Simply means Haymon would be more inclined to go the route of the Thurman fight before a Crawfod fight. Then we'd have to start looking at Haymon's stable at 154. And yes, I'm the Notorious C.H.E.A.P. Don't recall the last time I paid for a PPV fight. I've gone out to see some but mostly I'll catch a stream or wait until it's online the next day.
It's one thing to be cheap, but for Christ sake, Spence vs Crawford is the best matchup to be made in the sport in a LONG time. It's worth ordering if it happens.
No PPV that costs more than 5 bucks is worth it PPV is the biggest ripoff in the history of television and film. There's always a stream ... always
No. Hearns was an Orthodox knockout. Prime example of a Hagler orthodox knockout actually. Hagler loaded up on a big right hand thrown from a southpaw position then followed him around the ring and landed the right hand and then switched and finished him with with a big right cross, which can only be thrown from an orthodox stance.
Also check out Hagler's KO of Mugabi...switched to orthodox at the last minute to finish him with right crosses. Hagler preferred to knock people out in orthodox...as orthodox was his primal default instinct...southpaw was a manufactured stance for him.
I believe you meant in a couple months. There's always a stream available. Be it a few rounds behind the actual broadcast, in a different language or starting just after the fight ends. $100 to watch a fight is ridiculous. It makes as much sense as buying Blu Ray's over Netflix.
You're talking about "finishing" ... the actual hurt that put the opponents in that state usually occurred in the southpaw stance
You said he had to switch to knock out an opponent ... at best you might be able to assert he preferred to finish right handed after hurting the opponent left handed
We’re playing word games now. Knock out, finish...whatever you wish to call it....Hagler typically switched in order to stop the guy. He didn’t use the orthodox stance to “box”.
I wouldn't pay $9.99 when I know I can see it for free the same night. It's 2018, not 1998. Even if I had to wait a week, I'm ok with that as well.
