The ire of fans wasn't about actors replacing the old ones. That wasn't even remotely the point. It has been hammered ad nauseum that the main beef is with shoving politics down our throats. We don't care one bit about identity politics, PC culture and all the SJW crap that Lucasfilm has unleashed on us in the last three SW films. We tolerated it on Rogue One, hated it on The Last Jedi (plus they mistreated Luke Skywalker beyond repair) and we boycotted the pansexual Lando in SOLO, which I heard wasn't such a bad film after all. In fact SOLO was victim of the fans wrath for the Last Jedi.

If Disney doesn't give hoot about fans, then who will buy their merchandise? yes, the same merchandise collecting dust at Walmart & Dollar General Store at half the price tags. They will lose more money if they keep mistreating fans. I predict episode IX is going to be profitable, but will pale in comparison to The Last Jedi numbers which in turn made only HALF of the Force Awakens. That Rian Johnson trilogy first film will bomb so bad Disney will cancel the next two films. Mark my words!

PC politics is just one aspect of the negative fan criticism and no disrespect but since it’s your biggest gripe it’s the one you focus on. Terrible scripts, storyline and when it comes to TLJ, a basic lack of respect to past SW history is a much bigger issue for why these films have had such negative reception from the fans.

I don’t get the toy argument. I mean they are still making five year olds aren’t they? Isn’t that who was buying the original SW toys in the 70s and 80s?

Rogue One was probably the best newer SW film that has come out IMO. It was solid overall and Darth Vader was a nice addition. I don’t think it would be a good idea to try to milk Darth Maul like you suggest because they need to leave room open for the possibility of his own film in case shit really hits the fan. Instead of gimmicks I wish they could just figure out how to make a fun entertaining film like the good old days.

It is the older fans shedding big bucks for SW merchandise which came to a screeching halt with The Last Jedi release. Who you think pays for the toys of the 5 year olds anyway? This used to happen before: 'Dad, can you buy me a Spider-man doll?' Father, "I 'll do something better: I'll get you a Darth Vader action-figure with all the gadgets and a tie fighter too!" Now, "Dad can I get a Rey action figure for Christmas?' Father, "Nah, not worth it, but that Spider-Man doll you wanted before is kind of cool this year..."

 

Star Wars toys still sell like hotcakes and parents buy their kids what they ask for as long as it costs the same. What kind of vindictive piece of shit isn’t going to buy his kid a Star Wars toy because of the “SJW’s”?

Why would the merchandise sell when the characters are unmemorable?

Most of TLJ toys are collecting dust at discount stores. The Rose Tico doll was its biggest turkey as you can find the shelves full of them, while only a few original trilogy Luke Skywalker's remain. The rejection is obvious. There are many articles written and videos about this.

 

Oscar Isaac revealed in a recent interview that Star Wars Episode IX has more improvisation than the previous two films. If the script is good, there should not be room for improvisation. This is not a good sign.

Trailer for 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi: Re-Edit" done by professional editor & SW fan Ivan Ortega. Mr. Ortega spend the last few months painstakingly re-editing the film scene by scene, deleting the parts that didn't make sense, felt forced or stupid, added some new things here and there and above all, gave Luke Skywalker a more honorable portray than the official film did. This edit version is been eagerly awaited by hardcore fans who hated TLJ and is near completion. Ortega is doing this with his own money and out of love for the franchise (and Lucasfilm will probably sue him).

Just imagine if this was the trailer we got before seeing the movie...

 

Star Wars fans - specifically older fans - is your love of the franchise based on what you liked about them as a kid or do you think they still hold up today?
(That's the first three, the prequels and the new ones of the last 3-4 years)

 

They hold up nicely. Those films are timeless.

Because they're the foundation for the entire franchise (I'd say Return Of The Jedi is weak-ish)...but what about the next seven movies?

 

The other seven are all pretty much unwatchable to me. They take themselves too seriously and aren’t Oscar worthy.

I pretty much won’t watch any SW movie these days. I’m forever burned out on the original 3 and every other one has zero rewatchability IMO.

 

I have watched the prequels quite a few times. Revenge of The Sith more than the other two. The Force Awakens I rewatched only once as well as The Last Jedi once.

RotJ is just a bad sci-fi movie but it was my favorite as a kid. When I rediscovered SW I realized what great fucking movies the first two really were. Fuck this pretentious Citizen Kane bullshit, these are two of the greatest movies ever made.

The prequels were laughably bad sci-fi films.

TFA was FUCKING AWESOME! I was so amped that they were getting it right.

Then they pretty much killed the franchise with the last one.

 

Rogue One wasn't great, but was entertaining at least to me.
