For anyone who forgot, this thread isn't just another chance to trash bands not from the 60s and 70s. It's about transcendental songs. Something totally apart from who you may or may not like or think is good.

'Jump' was a huge hit for sure, wouldn't say it changed anything though.

    Yep, good shout.

Just to clarify - you're talking about the Pistols song and not the actual national anthem, right? :D

    Exactly

    It was a shitty example

At BEST, you could argue that it proved EVH was right that there was a sizable portion of the American public who had an appetite for embarrassingly cheesy synthesizers and light metal, proving David Lee Roth wrong and hastening his departure and the subsequent recruitment of arguably the biggest cheesedick idiot in rock music as new lead singer which begat more impossibly queer synthesizer light metal ... in other words, the only thing it changed at all was Van Halen and who gives a fuck about that?

You might not have liked "hair metal." I certainly did not. But it was big. And it was ushered in by Jump.

Hmmm I dunno about that, I wasn't a fan of the genre either but Quiet Riot might have something to say about that. Also, I think hair metal seemed to me like a normal progression from the way music was going at the time. Just a natural manifestation of the excesses of rock n roll, rather than this big thing which knocked popular music off of a linear path.

Regardless of the lineage, I think it would have been as big as it was whether 'Jump' was released or not.

    Nonsense

It already existed and was already popular with its niche fan base ... If anything, Jump made Van Halen more pop and moved them AWAY from hair metal

    Right

Van Halen barely even fit the genre ... Cinderella, Poison, Stryper, etc ... that's hair metal

Those guys made a fully done-up David Lee Roth look like Popeye Doyle

    What's wrong with Van Halen?
Came along at the right time.
Got out at the right time.

    Great band.

    Crap songs
    Crap aesthetics
Tasteless gimmick merchant jerk-off guitar that created a generation of fuckhead shredders who wouldn't know a melody if Mozart's ghost was fucking them up the ass
Idiot obnoxious twat singer with a shit voice who's not funny but thinks he is
Replaced by an even more irritating fuckhead poodle-haired cunt that needed his fucking face smashed in with an aluminum bat
Tedious Captain 8th Note short fat fuck bassist with the most horrible piercing voice doing the backups

Cornball shit for cunts that need utter liquidation

But that's bullshit, too and you know it

This is a hanzy move on your part... "oh I'm getting my shit pushed in, I better change the subject and make shit up to try and escape because I can't defend my stupid twat position"

    tl;dr: DIE

    I hate James Taylor

I respect Joni Mitchell, Court and Spark was pretty good, but I don't own a single album by her
