Guarantee you my wife couldn't pick Floyd out of a lineup ... I don't even watch basketball and she'd know Lebron James

That's how I rate the fame level of athletes... like, my mother would recognize Brady, Lebron James, Tiger Woods... she wouldn't know Floyd from Muggsy Bogues

Leonard in the 80s was more famous than Oscar, Pac, and Floyd ever got in their primes.

But if we concede those three, which we definitely can, then what other US athletes are more famous than Floyd?

Pretty much any elite current NFL QB is more famous to the average American than Floyd ... boxing is a minimally covered sport ... more people watch preseason NFL games than boxing in America... we get a skewed perspective because we all follow the sport ... my friends know Floyd Mayweather almost entirely because I watch boxing

    No, I don't think that's true at all. I think you're underrating Floyd's fame.

4 million Americans didn't pay $100 to watch a qb on PPV.

Brady's the only NFL player who's INDIVIDUALLY more famous than Floyd.

The NFL as a SPORT has always been hugely popular, but the athletes themselves are a lot less popular than the sport. Never forget that.

Which explains why the NBA is less popular than the NFL as a sport, but NBA stars will ALWAYS be bigger than NFL stars.

    In America? By light years

    So was Ray Mancini, really

Floyd is definitely one of the most famous American boxers since boxing vanished from mainstream TV but there's no comparison with when boxing was regularly on free tv and covered exhaustively by every major paper in the country ... my mother hates boxing and if you showed her a picture of Jerry Quarry or Earnie Shavers, she'd recognize them both (I know because I did that once out of curiosity... She got Quarry right away ... Shavers she knew was a fighter from the 70s ... she mangled his name, "Bernie Shaver?" ... but dude was just a contender and she knew his face enough to guess pretty close ... Boxing just isn't anywhere near a mainstream sport anymore so regular people can literally go years without even hearing about it, never mind knowing who anybody is

4 million people watching nationally televised NFL games would be a disaster for the NFL ... Aaron Rodgers is on my tv every time I bother turning the fucking thing on, Floyd isn't ... the NFL is a mainstream sport ... the kind where its biggest players are seen by audiences in the dozens of millions ... I think your perspective is skewed by following the sport closely and by being a black. Everyone knows blacks love other blacks. I just want to make sure you read the whole post.

Floyd does have the advantage over any NFL player in global stardom, though.

Floyd would get mobbed by fans walking through London.

Nobody in London is gonna know or care who the fuck Tom Brady is.

Yeah, but the NFL is a TEAM league. Americans don't really the follow the players, they follow their teams.

Opposite of the NBA, which is a player's league. NBA fans rarely gravitate toward a team as much as they do a player.

So I think your perception might be skewed because the NFL as a SPORT is so popular, but doesn't mean all the players are mainstream stars.

Man, QBs are like matinee idols in football... I'm not talking about a fucking Right Tackle or a Strong Safety... quarterbacks are clearly talked about as much as any individual athletes possibly are in America

I digress. I think our original point was that nobody knows who the fuck Deontay Wilder is, and that makes him butt hurt.

If Wilder wants to be known by casuals he better get the Jackson-Graham esque KO victory here

I think this is going to be a cagey affair. Wilder will be patient and look to size up Fury. He knows he has the power to hurt him at any point. Fury will not overcommit and will want to frustrate Wilder and possibly make things ugly. I don't think there will be a lot of exchanges, BUT, if the fight goes long and Fury is still there, look for Wilder to then start opening up and taking risks.

    Wilder by KO between 9-12.

Pre-fight antics have much less meaning than movies and the entertainment industry would like you to believe, but if they do mean anything, then Fury has already won this bout. He is a superb showman with a madman's confidence.

That said, I still pick Wilder. He is better than he gets credit for and Fury's conditioning is suspect, at best

I still think Fury avoids fighting and wins a decision in an awful bout

It will be the battle of the jabs but I think Fury isn't what he was and Wilder's explosiveness will be a deciding factor.
