VK is probably the more solid puncher, in the sense that all of his shots were hard and powerful, but he didn't had the equaliser that Wilder have

Come on fella, we are both as well versed as can be in the old school British domestic scene, and we both know the Fury that McDermott beat is incomparable to the Fury of today. Vitali was on point from the get-go where as Fury kinda grew into it. Obviously any Vitali beats the Fury from York Hall but the current Tyson is a completely different proposition. Don't get me wrong I still pick Vitali but he is not having it easy at all.

 

Vitaly wasn't quick to step in and avenge his little brother's humiliating one-sided loss to Tyson Fury 3 years ago. Vitali was scared he'd be made to look stupid just like his brother was.

 

Vitaly was just a more “solid” guy. Not physically but technically and in his approach.

Fury’s kind of what I call a ‘flimsy’ boxer but it’s offset by how big and strong a guy he is. He looks like he should be an awkward opponent for an elite guy for a few rounds but once it settles in and the guy stops listening to his bells and whistles they’ll walk through him.

Wlad was so used to sitting in his tower and pressing buttons that he didn’t know how to pressure and didn’t seem willing to try against such a big guy. Wilder doesn’t have the fundamental skills to really apply pressure. After a few rounds Vitaly would just start walking up to Fury during his feints and twitches and kick his ass.

 

Keep in mind, Vitali in the late 90s had a lot more pop on his shots than the old man Vitali that Chris Nipples faced.

I think the reason Vitali wins isn't because of power or speed or anything like that, it's due to the fact he doesn't need to be set to punch, Fury will find it much more difficult to keep him offset. Still don't think Vitali would have an easy time of it though.

I think Tyson Fury hits harder than people realise, too: a 6´8, 260lb boxer with long arms is not a light-puncher.
He just chooses not to set himself up and plow-through with big, heavy, solid shots, which is why he´s so good at all the other stuff he does.

 

Fury doesn't load up. He just throws his punches right from the waist and scores the points and stays slippery and moving around. He's got a heavy enough punch. If he really loaded up, he'd be knocking guys out more often than not. He's like Ali in how he hits. Score the points rather than worrying about landing a big shot. A 6'8, 260 lb boxer will KO anyone if he landed some big shots.

Not really. Fury made Wlad look like a joke. And Wlad is technically more sound than Vitali.

 

It's suggested otherwise because for all the talk from guys like Ugo about nostalgic bias, it's never addressed on here that RECENCY BIAS is just as real.

These three oafs are fun to watch and all, and all three have charisma, but none of them are especially good.

Vitali had the personality of a board and was very methodical, but quality wise he was simply better than AJ, Wilder, Fury.

 

I like Tyson Fury and he´s (and Joshua) a great advert for Heavyweight boxing in a time when popularity is at a pretty low ebb....that said, he doesnt do anything special and if you look back at the fight with Wilder, a LOT of his combinations are basic one-twos.

Every generation has its ´golden age`: the 70s with Ali, Frazier, Foreman and Norton, the 80s with Tyson, the 90s with Holyfield, Lewis, Tyson and Bowe, etc (and of course Irish, who loves the Klitschkos from 2000)

So, given that last shitty example of ´great era´, it´s probably a good thing that we do have some jostling for position at the top today.
