There are far, far fewer ring deaths these days than 10-15 years ago. I'm not sure what happened, but it is obvious and clear.
The last championship death might be the WBO 115 lb guy who didn't show any signs until the next day. Vegas fight, undercard on Barrera/Morales rematch.

Yo Sam Choi was a champ who died from a fight injury, but after his reign was over. I think that was more recent.

 

Kov-Stevenson could have gone either way. Would have come down to who can land first.

Stevenson’s situation is unfortunate. Hindsight is 20-20 but I think he hung on a little too long. He probably should have retired a year or two ago. I thought he looked bad in a couple of fights against those bums he fought. And against Badou Jack his reflexes appeared shot.

Ditto for Kov. I think he needs to consider hanging up his gloves. He’s taken two bad beatings and that shortens lives.

i think it sucks that stevenson got hurt in the fight and i hope he can recover somehow, as unlikely as it seems. that said, the guy showed signs of this occurring in his last two fights. he looked like an old fighter going on fumes

 

Yeah, I was surprised to hear he was still fighting, especially a young dangerous guy. He’s made good money for a while so I figured he’d probably have a retirement showcase against a can and call it quits.

I dont think it had anything to do with sticking around too long. I would say that if Stevenson was a guy who endured a lot of punishment in his career, but he didn't at all.
