How does today's Heavyweight big banger compare with those of previous 5 decades:
    Sonny Liston
    Joe Frazier
    George Foreman
    Earnie Shavers
    Mike Tyson
    Lennox Lewis

He's a totally different puncher to those guys.

I'd rate his power 7.5 at best. He could be better, he could hit harder, if he put on some weight and had just a bit better technique.

But it's ridiculous to compare him to the above.

He's unique in the height, arm-length, style, and mentality of his punching is different too.

Excellent power but well below the "this guy may be the hardest puncher in the history of mankind" hyperbole being spouted

Power is power when it comes to punching though.

Yes, but his mentality is different. He throws like a guy who is 3 points behind in the last round. A sense of desperation. All-In.

Wilder reminds me of Ron Lyle in the first few seconds of his fight v George Foreman

Fury doesn't have a great chin. He's got an average chin. Not bad not good, just adequate. Wilder couldn't improve on the efforts of Steve Cunningham and Neven Paijic.

    Says a lot really.

Fury was coming back from diabetic obesia, alcoholism, failed tests and cocaine bingeing. Sort of like Cooney vs Spinks.

Yes in the manner of it's effect on lesser, damaged opponents.

No in the manner that when he detonates, it's usually on smaller, slower, older shitty guys or guys who are just plain shit.

He gets the effect he gets because he slashes and flails, all in, and get's whip on the shots.

He's turning lights out but the bulb never shatters.

Guys like Vitali gave people irreparable brain damage with none of the fanfare.

    It isn't easy to define

The power in his haymaker right is indeed huge, but it doesn't mean much because against the best, you rarely get to load it up, much less have a chance of landing.

Apart from that right, his overall power isn't anything special, he isn't like Foreman or Tyson who could hurt you with almost every shot.

So much better than Irish would like, but not something that would make cdogg choke to his werther's original either

    I gave him 7.5.

"So much better than Irish would like" would be 9 or 10.

So go ahead, give him 9 or 10, I dare you.

It seems like whenever he hits someone flush, he does a lot of damage. Like single punch power that can completely change the dynamic of a fight. Granted though that we haven't seen him compete against anywhere near the best heavyweights ever so it's so hard to judge. Basically Tyson Fury is the best he's fought so far which is still excellent level of competition. But the division is very weak overall. There are no Lewis/Tyson/Holyfield/Holmes/Foreman/Vitali etc to really give Wilder a stern test to see how hard he can hit.

They say power is generated from the legs but Wilder's legs look like a stick insect's.

I think he hits as hard as any of them, possibly excluding shavers. Ridiculously hard. That doesn't mean he's as good as any of them

His power is as good as it gets. Definitively among the best punchers ever. Yes his opposition is not all that, but he put all of them on their asses (or got a standing stoppage)

Yup. In terms of flush single shots he probably hits harder than tyson. Mike was just much better at delivering his and then following them up.

He definately has legit power and deserves to be in the list of 'heaviest hitters', even just for the fact he's one of the lightest champions since Tyson in the '80s.
His initial style of right hand is 'kind of' like Thomas Hearns in its delivery but everything else that follows when he stuns an opponent is embarassingly stupid and ungainly, which is why he's not a good finisher as such:

Mike is a way better fighter and also a really hard puncher so he must hit harder. Alright.

I think he's right up there. Obviously there are much better fighters than him littered throughout boxing history but in terms of power he's no joke. I do agree though that it's a different kind of power due to the way he delivers it. Liston and Foreman were like battering rams, Wilder is like Ray Winstone's character wielding the pool balls inside the sock in Scum.

It's definately power by which Eddie Hearn doesn't want Joshua going anywhere near but he's going to have to face it next year.

no Mike is a wife you've been married to for 20 years. She's proven goods. Wilder is a one night stand you married in Vegas.
