It was right on point. Lewis attempted that same right hand a few times earlier on Rahman but didn't get full impact. This right hand in the photo hit 100% flush to Rahman's jaw. Any normal man likely would've been dead.

How did Shavers hit so hard? Looking at his technique, he's pretty wild in his punches.

The uppercut that Lewis landed on Vitali in the 6th round which blew a hole through the bottom of Vitali's upper lip was so powerful that people all the way in the nosebleeds of the Staples Center said it sounded like a shotgun went off.

Yep. Like just about any athletic attribute things can be improved through practice and working on better technique but that can only do so much.

Make it your life's goal to punch as hard as Shavers and you'll have about as much success being as fast as Usain Bolt.

    Exactly

All you can do is be as fast as you can be, punch as hard as you can punch ... there's no exercise or training that will give you Julian Jackson's power... if there was, everybody would be doing it

that's not true at all. Punching power is mostly developped by praticing and by using the right technique

Which enables you to punch as hard as you can punch, not as hard as Earnie Shavers punches which is entirely puerto rock's fucking point

    Possibly.
But at some point, the practising of the technique need to work in harmony with the physical attributes of a boxer.
The fact of the matter is that punching power does not work the way most people think it does. Not all facets of this are within the body of the fighter.
To put power into a punch, you need to generate force - to generate force, you need mass and the ability to accelerate it. Getting bigger and hitting faster are one answer to adding mass and acceleration, but it only take you so far.
It also depends on where you hit the target: in the old days aiming for ‘the bulb’, a cluster of nerves under the right eye that was believed to produce knockouts.
Modern-day, the consensus target is the jawline and the temples.

The Top 10 Heavies that can put you down and/or out with one shot that I´ve seen on multiple occasions in my lifetime are (probably in this order):
    George Foreman
    Earnie Shavers
    Rocky Marciano
    Mike Tyson
    Lennox Lewis
    Deontay Wilder
    Joe Frazier
    David Tua
    Gerry Cooney
    Dononvan Ruddock

Punching power is trained for sure. If you have enough weight, torque and speed behind it you will punch hard

Outside of the Heavyweight division, and by the same logic:
    Julian Jackson
    Thomas Hearns
    Wilfredo Gomez
    Gerald McClellan
    Ruben Olivares
    Alexis Arguello
    Matthew Saad-Muhammad
    Carlos Zarate

Yeah, punching-power is trained like that: for ALL BOXERS.
But there´s that next-level of power which depends on different genetics and physics

It's like arguing that by practicing a lot any 5'11 guy could be Lebron James

Core-strength increase would improve it though: heavy squats, deadlifts, military presses in particular

A puncher is as much "born" as a 100 mph fastball pitcher. Sure, some have genetic advantages that make it possible for them to reach higher limit, but even with the right genes, you wont be much of a power puncher if you dont put a few thousand hours of practice. Look at McGregor. Guy has all the potential to be a hard puncher, yet compared to most boxer, hes a powder puffer since his technique is so bad.

This whole " puncher are born not breed" stupidity make it seems like you could take a bum on the street and he could punch as hard as any pro boxer

Nobody said you don't have to practice

That isn't what the saying means ... it means that all the practice and technique in the world will never make Chris Byrd hit like Shavers just like there's literally nothing Greg Maddux could have done that would have made him throw as hard as Nolan Ryan

You can only reach YOUR maximum, not somebody else's

No. The saying imply that power is only natural and that even if you practice, you cant improve it. Which is a crock of shit.

Pretty much succes in everything in life is part genetic part practice, yet ive pretty much only seen this stupid saying used for punchers

    No it isn't

It's not meant as a fucking scientific observation. You're just arguing for the sake of arguing because you're a fussy cunt.

If you're a guy who cannot hit as hard as Shavers, practice/training may get you there.

It won't though, unless you have the genetics.

Take a guy like Malignaggi, you could change his style, get him to sit down on shots, from whatever age, you might get him hitting a bit harder, sure, but he's never going to be a one-hitter quitter.

Yes if you already hit almost that hard ... otherwise, no

If you could obtain power like that just by practice and training, everyone would hit like Earnie Shavers

Talent is a thing, genetics are a thing. All the practice in the world will not turn Julio Franco into Ted Williams. It will only turn Julio Franco into the best Julio Franco. This isn't even a debate.

because it's too late. It probably takes years and years to snap a punch with proper torque
