Exactly. Do these guys seriously think Malignaggi didn't train as hard as he could and try his best to hit as hard as he could? Of course he did. Nobody just decides not to have any power. He just didn't have it.

Think about it logically you have two men same size same weight same height and you're telling me one is born with some magical Secret punching power and one is not?? One simply knows how to do it and one doesn't

"So you're saying there's no point in training or practicing anything?"

You're wrong as always. I've seen some so called boxing expert pretend that it's pretty much impossible to improve your power.

Wasn't Tommy Hearns a non-puncher who developed his power as he came up to pro?

And somehow this most basic aspect of boxing was never taught to a guy that started doing it in his teens, is that your testimony here?

Malignaggi is a perfect example of a guy not training to punch as hard as he could. His punching technique was full of flaws

Exactly. Some training with the power punching specialist and he'd be Julian Jackson.

That isn't what the saying means ... it means that all the practice and technique in the world will never make Chris Byrd hit like Shavers just like there's literally nothing Greg Maddux could have done that would have made him throw as hard as Nolan Ryan

You can only reach YOUR maximum, not somebody else's[/QUOTE]

Byrd wasn't a true heavyweight though. He was a far smaller man, smaller bones, smaller hands...he wasn't going to be as physically strong as natural heavyweights.

oh he told you that?? or maybe he made a conscious choice to learn to slap stick and move instead of sitting down on his punches

He was, but he also was almost malnourished when he was an amateur. No matter how talented a guy is, if he never gets to eat then of course he is not going to reach his full potential.

There are some exceptions to the normal trend. Robert Helenius went full rounds with nearly every scrub when he began his pro career, as he had a problem with his punching technique. Once his trainers figured it out, he began to knock hard-chinned people out (even though otherwise he wasn't very good)

So yes, punching technique matters and it can be learned, but you still need the talent, the genetics, the cells to be a hard puncher. Helenius was able to do it, because he had the genes. WIthout them, no training would have brought the same results, even though he could have become better than he was before

There was some Irish dude fighting on the Brook undercard the other day, forget his name, he was something like 16-0 but only had 3 stoppages. Anyway he fought like a puncher, setting his feet, digging his toes into the canvas, technically he was doing everything right and catching his opponent flush.

    Nothing.

There are other boxers you could have put in his place, fighting EXACTLY the same way, and those shots would have got the other guy out of there. He just didn't have it.

    Yup. That'll be next

This stretch of the thread is guys arguing that somebody said practice and training don't improve power... an argument never actually put forth ... and then doubling down on the idea that one can simply practice their way into punching like Earnie Shavers (oddly, no one seems to bother doing so... I guess they're busy with other stuff besides acquiring the ability to kill opponents with one good shot)

If he had the proper training he could skate as fast as Bobby Orr and beat Magnus vs Magnusson in a strong man contest.

How does cdogg claim himself to be an expert on this topic when the only punch he ever threw was at his Asian girlfriend after she dumped his ass? Where are the real boxing experts who've actually trained in boxing?

I used to think that this whole puncher are born not breed bullshit was true, till I trained with some top level guys. Their punching technique was so much more refined than the one of even decent boxers, and the power they generated was astonishing

Yes he did and he had zero power

You want to deny talent and genetics are actual things and that technique and practice have a ceiling of effectiveness related to those things? Fine, you're entitled to be wrong.
