I'd pick Chandler. I admit I have not seen much of Canizales (haven't found too many of his fights on you tube). But what I have seen I did not find overly impressive.
That's because Orlando's resume was notoriously underwhelming. His best win and best performance was the Seabrooks fight, which I'm assuming you've seen. Excellent offensive clinic, despite the fact that Seabrooks wasn't exactly an elite guy. I'd pick Chandler too. He beat the much better fighters of the two, including Orlando's brother, Gaby. Both guys are roughly the same tier though - excellent bantams, but neither were in the class of the bantam immortals like Jofre, Olivares, and Zarate.
I had to look on Boxrec, yeah, looks like he lost a decision to Gaby, but I've never seen that fight. Yeah, Canizales' offensive footwork was beautiful and so were his combos. Dare I say, Canizales was like a very poor man's Napoles.... offensively at least. Napoles was A LOT better, so it's unfair to compare, but Canizales sure threw fluid, hurtful combos. I think he'd have trouble with Chandler's range though.
Never seen that one. If it's on Youtube I'll check it out this week. But yeah, to this matchup, I think Canizales would have trouble dealing with Chandler's range and jab, and of course, Chandler had good pop in the right to keep Canizales honest.
Just checked. Yeah, it's on Youtube... it's in 5 parts, but it's all there. I'll watch it later this week. There's already a number of fights I plan to watch tonight. Yes, I'm that much of a boxing geek that I plan out my fight to watch schedule in advance . This week I've mainly been depressed at the fact that's virtually no full fights of a prime Jofre available on Earth... save for his first fight with Medel, which I've watched plenty of times. I feel like if there was a plethora of Jofre fights available, that he might be one of my all time favorites. From what is available it's easy to see the guy was fucking awesome. Like a hybrid of Ray Robinson and Joe Louis in a bantam's body.
I got a list of all HBO broadcasts in the 90's and tried to watch the ones I hadn't seen. But the quality on YouTube is so shitty. Seems like fights from the 80's have better quality. Kind of makes me wish I did not throw away all my fights.
I still have all of my considerable VHS collection.... all in mint condition. If there's a fight in particular you wanted, let me know, and I'd be able to tell you immediately if I have it. Dunno how you'd feel about good ole VHS' but I could try to convert them to DVD's.
Thanks! Yeah. I had started converting mine to DVD because I noticed they were slowly decaying but then everything went HD and digital and my unit didn't really work as a result. I said fuck it. Maybe HBO will create some online library. But then I couldn't cancel it.
I highly doubt HBO is gonna create some online library. That Peter Nelson guy doesn't give a shit about boxing. If he did, they woulda continued on. I knew the first time I saw him interviewed that he didn't care about the sport. They needed a boxing fanatic running HBO sports.
Lots of clips but yeah for the most part it's the wily old featherweight Jofre where you find full matches (and the two Harada fights of course)
I still have a fair amount of VHS ... I can convert it to DVD if I have any of what you're looking for
His KO win over Bernando Caraballo is on Youtube, save for rounds 2, and 3. So it's rounds 1, 4, 5, 6, and the KO in 7. That's not a bad find. Jofre himself is narrating in the background, and the quality isn't great, but it's something. The one in particular I wish was available was his win over Johnny Caldwell, which historians say was one of his finest performances. But to my knowledge, the full fight doesn't exist anymore. I didn't know the reason why they don't exist until recently, I found out from the guys on Eastside. The Brazilian TV station that carried all his fights burned down in the 80s.... thus losing all his fights.
Yeah unfortunately I think the full Caldwell bout is lost to history... he dished out a beating on Caraballo (who also gamely took his lumps from Harada)
