Robert De Niro appreciation thread

Arguably the best to ever do it, and the most natural and charismatic actor of all time. He's mostly sucked for the past twenty years or so but that doesn't take away from his greatness from the early 70s to mid 90s.

Name a more entertaining actor than Robert DeNiro.

hackmam's weakness is he's too impersonal and distant, like other characters are barely there.

De Niro in his peak years was amazing

Now he just plays a sort of caricature of Robert De Niro

But think of how wonderful he was in so many films... Godfather Part II, Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, The Deer Hunter, Raging Bull, The King of Comedy, The Untouchables, Midnight Run, Goodfellas ... fantastic performances

The King of Comedy has always stood out for me as DeNiro's most underrated performance.

 

I think Heat was his last great performance, before he became a caricature.

 

Do you really think that though...or just because it's 'cool' to think that?

 

I don't see how it's "cool" to think, The King of Comedy is one of his forgotten greats.

I don't think it was his career best performance or anything, but it was an excellent one and it never gets acknowledged.

 

Most overrated DeNiro performance - Cape Fear. Talk about overacting.

Robert Mitchum played Max Cady far better in the original.

 

More entertaining? Stallone & Arnie! DeNiro was a great actor, but most of the films he has been in has sucked massive balls. During his prime he was far from being considered one of the 'most entertaining actors'.

 

And that's...about...it! Everything else he did sucked balls. His last decent performance was in 'Cape Fear'.

 

Yup! DeNiro was just 'decent' in that one. Everything else he has done since that film is mere pay jobs where he phones his performance via facial twists.

 

Could list tons, but then that would a) 'educate' you b) cause you to check out some of their movies and c) fill-in the gaps in your knowledge

My knowledge of movies is at worst on par with yours, but by all means, throw some names out. You better come with something stronger than "Stallone and Arnie" though.

 

Its an intentionally hammy, old fashioned film, from the DUN DUN DUNNNNNNN music, simplistic story/themes, ridiculously wrought set pieces (with lightning!), etc....the overacting was part of it. Thought he was great

From your list, I´d say those which are ´quintessential´ De Niro movies as opposed to ´best´ would be that early-to-mid-70s period:
Band The Drum Slowly
Mean Streets
Taxi Driver

The facial expressions, the vocal tones, etc, the stuff people use to mimic him.

So, movies like 1900, True Confessions, The King Of Comedy (and maybe The Deer Hunter). are all great movies, they don´t show De Niro acting in the typical De Niro method.

I think that you meant to say that DeNiro was arguably the greatest actor of his era, not 'the most entertaining'. Just like Marlon Brando was the greatest actor of his era, but John Wayne & Burt Lancaster were more entertaining than him.

 

In terms of pure entertainment, Nicholson was the best of that era.

He certainly wasnt as good as DeNiro as a character actor, but Jack's the most charismatic actor of all time and had a electricity about him that DeNiro never had.

Maybe only Paul Newman beats Jack in charisma.

 

I disagree. Nicholson always has rubbed me the wrong way. The majority of his films in the 70s were box office flops which tells you most audiences didn't like him that much. He hit the jackpot when he played the Joker which put $60 million in his bank account and made him immensely popular with regular Joe's. Lucky him that producer Michael Uslan turned down Tim Burton's original choice for the Joker, Brad Dourif, as he wanted a more recognizable name in the film besides Mr. Mom Michael Keaton.
