Man this movie is going to flop big time. It looks like shit and I don’t get where they saw the angel to even green light a big budget film like this. Is it from a bestselling novel?

I disagree. This looks like groundbreaking scifi cinema. It can be hit or miss at the box office, but artistically looks amazing. Steampunk is subgenre in science fiction with many fans worldwide. There hasn't been many films in that subgenre since '2000 Leagues Under The Sea' and other Jules Verne films from the early 60s. This looks like a mix of Japanese Anime with Steampunk and it looks awesome!
Yes, this film is based on the first of four best seller books in the series Predator Cities by Phillip Reeve which derived from two short stories by Polish scifi author Stanislaw Lem (Solaris).

Obviously I could be wrong, but judging from the trailer the story looks like it’s all over the place. Never trust CGI centered films, I’d be surprised if it doesn’t get negative to average reviews.

This is Peter Jackson. He will get glowing reviews.

Okay I was wrong about the 'This is Peter Jackson. He will get glowing reviews'. It got bad reviews and the movie indeed flopped like lb 4 lb predicted. That said, I watched it last night and loved it! Yes, there are some problems with the plot and characters development (I am under the impression that Peter Jackson filmed a three and a half hours film and was asked to trimmed to two hours, sacrificing character's back stories). I could see obvious metaphors about SJWs, cultural diversity and the border politics...it didn't bothered me. I was too engrossed by the whole thing. In my opinion this film will eventually become a cult film like Blade Runner. The aesthetics are marvelous. This genre merits more exploration. 7.5/10

Firstly, Blade Runner doesn’t deserve to be a cult classic film because everyone got it right the first time, it sucks.

Secondly your whole post was full of nothing but negative descriptions of the film. So what was good about it again?

  9. Right on the money!

Blade Runner bombed at the box office and got so-so reviews when it opened, but it did became a cult classic and very influential to many other scifi films.

Mortal Engines has a great look (sets, costumes, special effects), fast pace action and is unpredictable for the most part. Loved the little homage touches here and there (even the Minions had a cameo as ' North American relics' which was funny as hell). It feels like a live-action Anime movie. I am sure many fans of that genre will enjoy it. Not a great film, but is entertaining and original.
