Mannnnn I hate to keep sayin it, but it just makes me miss HBO. Cheerleading and agendas aside, the sport just doesn't feel the same without them. I don't so much miss contemporary HBO team w/Kellerman on it. But the team of Lampley/Merchant/Roy... or Hell, even Lampley/Merchant/George.... yeah, I miss those days. It's nearly impossible for me to envision DAZN (or ESPN and Fox) ever ever ever ever covering a big fight as well as HBO.
We'll see how the future pans out. If Teofimo moves up after July, and has one or two explosive performances at 140, and they're still feeding Ramirez soft touches to keep the belt, then I could see Top Rank figuring that Ramirez is easy pickings for Lopez to pick up a belt, and making that matchup.
I think he could get to Prograis because his specialty seems to be neutralizing boxers. But Prograis appears to be more than just a boxer. He is also a dangerous puncher. So Ramirez would likely be knocked out in the process of applying pressure.
Merchant was a Jaded Prick and REED for One DOESN'T Miss His Perpetual NEGATIVITY @ All...He Didn't Seem to LIKE His Job for @ Least the Final 15-20 Years of His Career, So Good Riddance... Sure, Boxing COMMENTARY is Suffering (For Now) in the Post-HBO Era, but REED Can't Say his Sense of Anticipation or Fight Night EXCITEMENT is Any Less, Viewing these Newer Platforms and Streaming Services... And Before Waxing Poetic Toooooooooooooooo Much on HBO, Let's Not Forget Who Broadcasted Prince Naseem and Roy Jones' BEST Ring Entrances...HBO Certainly WASN'T Above "Bells and Whistles", as REED Calls It... REED
I'm on the fence when it comes to Merchant. He certainly was at times jaded and negative but it wasn't always unwarranted. With him you typically knew you were getting an honest opinion as he didn't really need the job.
Dude, we have a team of Ray Flores and a former NBA shooting guard calling fights, and people act like Merchant isn't missed. Well fuck that! I miss the Hell outta Larry!
disagREED... Merchant Seemed to Go OUT of his Way to Be a DICK, More Times Than Not...Particularly in the Timeframe REED Noted..."Early Doors" HBO Merchant was FINE...But Something Definitely CHANGED w/Him Along the Years...He Became RUDER and Rarely Seemed to Actually ENJOY Sitting Ringside for Bouts... You Can Be "Honest" w/Out Being a Condescending PRICK About It...Mark Kriegel's Managed to Pull it Off Just Fine, from What REED's Seen of Him Thus Faaaaaar... REED
DAZN was in a PINCH, X... They'd Just Done a Show the Night Before in Cali, w/a Different Crew...This ISN'T the Norm and Quite Frankly, DAZN Doesn't have the Budget for Superior Broadcast Talent, Right Now...They've FRONT ENDED Sooooooo Many Hefty Contracts They HAD to Raise Rates Barely 6 Months Into their U.S. Launch... That Said, Instead of Relishing in EXCELLENT Action on Back to Back Nights, from the SAME Source, You're Turning This Into an "I Miss Larry Merchant" Session???... Suuuuuurely, You Can @ Least UNDERSTAND Why Merchant Wasn't Everybody's Cup of Tea, in the Latter Half of his Career???...It's Like "Missing" a Dude that Called You a "Piece of Shit" Everyday for the 1st 20 Years of Your Life... Bye Felicia!!! REED
Kriegel is unfuckingbearable. You have got to be his only fan. Dude is just totally unlikable and doesn't have a FRACTION of Merchant's boxing knowledge or charisma. Merchant on his WORST day is still 15 light years above that fucking hack Kriegel.
When/Where Did REED Say he was a "Fan" of Kriegel's???... REED Merely Stated Dude Seems to Be "Honest" w/Out Going Out of His Way to Be a DICK in the Process, Which Seemed to ESCAPE Latter Days Merchant... REED
DAZN needs to be far more concerned with having reliable broadcasts than who is doing commentary. their streams aint exactly ESPN+ quality
Espn+ hasn't been perfect either. Can't remember a single broadcast (ESPN or dazn) that has not had at least one lapse. One thing with DAZN that drives me nuts is if you "rewind" it will repeatedly skip ahead eventually. And for both, the menus blow. It should operate like a DVR. "Do you want to start from the beginning?" But instead you have to start it and then manually rewind. You wonder why the UI of cable TV is so superior to streaming apps.
agREED... REED Had to Restart the Prograis-Relikh Live Stream 2-3 Times in the 1st Couple Rounds...Came Off w/Out a Hitch Upon Rewatching that Bout, but That Ain't Exactly a Selling Point... REED
'Great' Implies SEAMLESS... And While REED'll Readily Admit ESPN+ Streams Have FEWER Interruptions than DAZN, They've Been Faaaaaaaaaaaaaar from Perfect Themselves... All in All, REED is Much More SATISFIED than Dissatisfied w/Both Services... REED
ESPN has Disney money backing them, I would expect nothing less than perfect streaming quality from them. While ESPN+ has better streaming quality, DAZN gives you a shitload more boxing and better matchups. So, there quality needs to match that of ESPN.
Can't see it going over too well among old school fighters. "Larry Holmes, step intooooooooooo the lights!" "Kiss my big, black ass! Get me in that ring!"
