Fighters who could've been "stars" with better management and promotion..

If we accept the premise that some fighters rise to prominence on the basis of crafty promotion/ clever matchmaking and weight cheating, the implication is there are untold numbers of would be "stars" who simply didn't have the backing they would've needed to reach such heights. Can you identify fighters that fall into this category?

The premise is simplistic and absurd, though

Oh it is? So there's no such thing as an overrated fighter?

Think about it. You really think it's absurd to suggest the backing of well connected managers and promoters is enough in many cases to turn a decent or above average fighter into a perceived top ender?

I'd like to see an example of the OP first to determine how generously the adjective "star" is being applied

It's in quotes for a reason busy body. Munguia is a good current example.

    Munguia is/was a star?

If you're setting the bar that low...

Broner. Yes busy body. I put it in quotes for a reason.

    "Busy body"... you're painfully awkward

I'm interested in your list of guys who could've otherwise reached this poorly defined level of "stardom" if only the elites did not wants them to haz cheeseburger ... prediction: all of them will have "subtle" defensive skill and no apparent connection to anything even vaguely hip-hop

I take comfort in knowing you are miserable. Does that make me bad?

I take no comfort in knowing you are retarded... does that make me kind?

I think you are a legitimate public safety risk - one of those ticking time bombs who blames others for his lot in life.

Hardly... I'm probably the most swell chap here. Lot in life lol wtf? I have a beautiful wife, great friends ... I can only blame that on being awesome... you're the guy addicted to outrage porn railing against "elites" every day of your life.

I picture you as a socially awkward, frustrated dork... probably married to a vegan who irritates the fuck out of you

So how do you explain your busy bodiness, hostility, and desire to do away with capitalism?

Busy bodiness... this is a message board

Really? He got a totally unearned title shot and millions based almost entirely off of being white

Zab Judah. I made this case a few years ago but with his size and height he should have definitely been campaigning no higher than 140 and in fact would have been better off cutting down to 135. I think he potentially would have had a much more successful career being a guy who preferred to rely mostly on talent and didn’t like to work hard.

Also by not going up to welterweight, he wouldn’t have had to compete with guys twice his size all the time and get labeled as someone who wasn’t tough enough.

He was held up, out of the ring, for 12 months for fear he would lose his title shot, which was most detrimental to his career.

I guess we have differing versions of what constitutes a "badly managed" career.

And it wasn't entirely off being white, either. Holmes fought plenty of dross and had plenty more lined up at the time of the Spinks debacle.

Ironically, if he wasn;t white, they wouldn't have "rushed" him in, he'd have gotten better over time.

When I say "rushed", it;'s worth noting he was left on the vine for a year to preserve his status.........plz note that I mean he was steered exclusively towards the title shot, in that sense he did very little for a long period as he was "Pushed" towards the shot.

I don't dispute there was a lucrative nature to his being white. It just wasn't lucrative to him as much as it was to others.

    It's bad management, period.

Nigel Benn used to say "If I get $3m and Don King gets $3m, I don't care".

That's fine Nigel, but if you lose money and take a beating, the fact that you made some money doesn't mean you were "Well Managed".

It makes me laugh.....guys like Wlad were fighting guys like Purritty, 12 round fights, when much much greener than guys like Byrd or Sanders or Morrisson or even fucking Vitali......

Most white heavyweights were badly managed, because of their alleged lucrative nature.

Quarry is another example. His father hadn't a fucking clue. Fighting with a broken back?

    Same with the Hiltons.

Whitey might have gotten the breaks in 1917 but not in 1977.
