    I think a big problem for Zab was his power. He could punch like a motherfucker, he really could. And he fell in love with his power far too often.

    If Zab was a feather fist he might have been forced to box more.

    Now, I'm not saying Judah could box like Benitez, but he boxed a lot better than many guys we consider leap amateurs.

    Yep Judah had some firepower that's for sure, and he wasn't afraid to swing em either.

    Though "Pernell Whitaker with power" was about the dumbest description for Judah ever made - fucking idiot Kellerman wasn't it?

    No, Judah was hyped as a hybrid of Whitaker/Tyson very early on his career - before Kellerman said it.

    He had the New York hype machine behind him. He also had Main Events behind him, and they also promoted Whitaker.

    If we ever saw a TRUE hybrid of Whitaker/Tyson, it would be a truly scary sight.

    Many will disagree with this one, but Howard Davis had some leap amateur in him - mentally.

    Physically, all the tools were there.

    But he was definitely a jittery fighter, and sometimes he used his handspeed with no real purpose.

    There was nothing amateur about his jab though, it was excellent.

    Another leap amateur trait is their defense - looks flashy initially, but....

    As soon as the leap amateur's fast yet lame/unthinking repertoire of head/hip movement is timed, its basically over and they'll start leaping backwards at a great rate of knots or get KTFO.

    Sergio Martínez comes to mind. Once he started to physically slow down and become more injury prone, that was essentially it.

    But prior to that he had a nice run.

    Martinez can be excused. He started boxing very late, and should be CREDITED for being as good as he was with minimal experience. Who knows how good Martinez would have been had he started the sport as a kid.

    Guys like Berto and Thurman started boxing as kids, so theres no excuse for them.

    Hmmm I dunno. I can't stand Broner but I do get your point. He wasn't a leap amateur in the traditional sense, and he didn't "leap" per se, he always was trying to sell the illusion of composure. I never bought it though, he was just trying to copy Floyd's moves the whole time. He didn't seem to understand that the shoulder roll only works if you have the timing nailed. He was just doing it for show rather than actually utilising it effectively. Prime example of it is the 2nd round against Maidana, but it was also obvious when he was getting pelted by the likes of Rees and Malignaggi.
