The Joker character was a worker / standup comedian who planned to steal US$1m from his employer and retire.
Fell into a vat of toxic/chemical waste when his plan was ruined by Batman, and he emerged with bleached white skin, red lips, green hair and a permanent grin.... this, combined with the earlier accidental death of his wife and unborn child, drove him insane and he turned to crime.

 

Where you expecting a faithful adaptation of his origins from the DCEU?

 

Something vaguely similar, yes.
Not a freakshow like Joaquim Phoenix tends to be involved in but I guess he reverts to type.

 

Yup. This Joker is closer to Norman Bates than Jack Napier.

I have been checking early reviews and apparently these critics are loving this film. Some are calling it a masterpiece, a slow burning Taxi Driver-like character study and all agree that Joaquin Phoenix delivered an Oscar worthy career best performance. As stated in prior posts this is NOT the comicbook Joker, but is based on that character. Instead of Jack his name is Arthur who works as a street clown with dreams of being a stand-up comedian within the context of a crime infested Gotham City which mirrors 1970s New York. This is the story of Arthur's slow descend into criminal madness. Critics are making clear that this is not a film for the Batman/comicbook crowd as it is devoid of all trappings of the genre and instead is a very realistic film that might or might not please fans of the genre, but is just a great film.

At first I didn't care for it.....but I think I'll go watch it....

 

I am intrigued now. I never cared about a Joker solo film and much less about one that departed from its comic book origins. But I a sucker for any good film regardless the genre. I might check this one out.

 

So why make the character look exactly like the DC Comics character, The Joker?

Oh wait, let's suck everyone in and make a ton of money by trying to fool people.

 

Personally I don't care about a solo Joker film, but I hear you. I read somewhere that the director of the film fought long and hard with the studio to turn this film into a serious character study instead of a flashy Suicide Squad-like film.

 

It's crap.

Here's my idea for a movie based on "The Joker" Formula.

A simple Austrian man, who merely wants people to buy his paintings, goes to MURKKKA and get's packed off to a foreign evil war, where evil Free Marketeer Brits spray gas in his eyes and he goes to Germany and then he goes to Russia in the middle of Winter. A misunderstood genius, right?

 

It's total shit. It's freeloading on previous creative efforts, of other people, of other eras. It's exactly how shit is today. A rip off and usually racially loaded at that.

Greek guy with no hair with a fat hairy brother goes around NYC solving shit.

He eats avocado toast to control his craving for nicotine.

I had this idea for a movie, it's about these 4 guys who don't want to work and they hijack a subway train instead. One of them is a mercenary scumbag, one a nerdy sort, the other an ex mob guy and the fourth is a former trainer driver.

It's just an idea.

Joker Is A Dangerous Film — & It’s Bringing Out The Worst In The Internet

 

It just looks comically overacted and just so fucking OBVIOUS in the previews ...

 

Unlike that fucking talentless hack Jared Leto who played Joker last time, Phoenix is actually an amazing actor, so I think this will be good.

Kind of a ironic that DeNiro is in this movie, considering by the previews Phoenix's character seems influenced by Travis Bickle.

 

Of course it is! The whole premise is derivative as fuck ...

The whole 'Suicide Squad' film was pure garbage.

 

That has to be intentional. Can't be a coincidence that Phoenix's Joker plays a failed comedian, and ends up trying to make it on a show hosted by DeNiro.

That's without question a wink/nod to The King of Comedy.
