I think picking any middleweight over Tito undermines just how awesome prime Hopkins was. The Trinidad of the Joppy fight would waste Dere, and that Trinidad would have stopped the Golovkin of Saturday night.
Never said he was. But he was better than Dere. Trinidad had a different type of power than Golovkin. Golovkin is a thudding, hurtful puncher. While Trinidad had snapping, explosive power.
Tito was dropped by welterweight Kevin Lueshing, middleweight Dere would keep him down. Getting dropped by Golovkin isn't THAT bad
Dere isn't a big puncher at all. He needed a full 12 to stop some bum who's name escapes me. Trinidad took a sustained 12 round beating from Hopkins before getting stopped, and Hopkins in 01 had A LOT more pop than Dere.
Trinidad would have stopped him mid rounds. Great middle or not, Tito was just a better fighter. And yes prime Trinidad was better than the Golovkin of the past 2 years. GGG is the one who’s overrated.
I'd probably pick Tito too, but this logic of flash knockdown in one fight = definite stoppage loss in another still escapes me
Golovkin never proved he could massacre any quality fighter. I'm now believing his prime was a myth... as far as being unstoppable at least. He's not Hopkins... not even close to Hopkins' level. I think the Trinidad from the Joppy fight has an excellent chance against version of Golovkin. Hell, Joppy was a lot better than the Geale's, Stevens', and Macklin's of the world.
Never said he was Hopkins level, but he's at least close to Wright level. In the jab department anyway.
Wright was a physically strong guy behind that turtle shell defense which he perfected over the years BTW. In his younger days at 154, he was a much more offensive and HITTABLE fighter, but that’s a different discussion because in now way, shape or form is Golovkin as talented or a awkward a fighter as the very likely PED’d version of Winky that beat Tito that night. As for Trinidad-Golovkin, I used to believe that despite being a better fighter pound 4 pound, Tito wouldn’t have beaten GGG at 160 but I’m starting to wonder now. Golovkin was always a very hittable, robotic type of guy. He was good, but not THAT good. I see no reason Tito wouldn’t have a great chance. There’s no height and reach advantage for Golovkin. Nor did he have adept footwork to create crazy angles and counter punching opportunities. He wasn’t a particularly good infighter either. He was always at his best coming from long range behind that long jab and right hand. He’s not close to a 2001 Hopkins or even the 2005 Winky in either style or ability.
I do agree. But I still think that pre-Hopkins version of Tito at 160 would be Golovkin’s best opponent.
Ummm yeah, sorry, but I wouldn't consider Dere close to the level of a HOFmer. Holy overrated. Trinidad would smoke Dere.
