You see what us humans do to each other and you're worried about a shark? When statically speaking, there's less than 20 shark attacks per year, and only about 1-2 fatalities every OTHER year.

You're more likely to get struck by lightning than attacked by a shark, even IF you're a regular ocean goer.

There's a SHITLOAD of animals that kill more people annually than sharks do.

 

How many drownings per year compared to shark deaths?

That's a big reason why people stay away from the ocean... most people can't swim, and even ADVANCED swimmers drown every year.

Jaws forever impacted beach goers, though. No question about that.

Probably one of the top 5-10 most influential films in history for that reason.

Beaches everywhere in 1975, 1976 and 1977 were full of people because no-one would go in the sea!

 

Sharks and snakes are my least favourite animals. Fuck em both.

 

Jaws was a fictional film based on a fictional book. There have been several other films that falsely portray animals in negative ways. The only difference was people didn’t try to make a connection between animal hunting being caused by a movie.

Scores of people are and always will be attacked and killed by sharks every year. Whether the person actually passes through the shark’s digestive track and exits out of his ass is irrelevant just as the science of Jaws being accurate is irrelevant because it’s a fictional book/film.

Sharks would have been hunted and overfished regardless of whether Jaws was written or not so people and especially Peter Benchley need to stop making that ridiculous connection.

As for whether a shark is vindictive or not, how the hell do we know. Odds are it probably isn’t but nobody knows to a certainty that it couldn’t happen. Case in point the 2015 shark attack of 13 year old surfer Elio Canestri. The shark bit the boys arms and legs off and carried him out to sea while he was still alive. If that doesn’t sound like a vindictive attack I don’t know what does. Obviously its not absolute proof of a shark being vindictive but we also lack absolute proof that a shark can’t be vindictive.

Jaws - first encoounter wiz actually the Jaws 2 trailer at the ‘Flash Gordon’ flick in 1980, scared the life ootae me.

Two years later, at the grand age o’ seven, watched the proper, first film on Canadian telly (complete wi’ that ‘Kraft Peanutbutter’ commercial where the cub pack are all lost and are all waiting fer the fat lad tae finish the jar so he can find their way home). Didnae get any o’ the nuances o’ the dialogue but felt sad fer the Ma who’s only child wiz eaten and fair shat ma kilt when the corpse wi’ a missing eye floated past the hole in the hull o’ the ship!

 

I've been kayaking in the ocean out in a large bay off the coast of Maine, and for the split second I thought I was surrounded by sharks, I nearly died of a heart attack.

Turns out they were porpoises.

Turns out I was terrified of sharks and didn't even know it yet.

I don't go that far out in the bay anymore, and I didn't even see a goddamn shark.

 

Why wouldn't there be sharks in a Bay?
