thoughts? i feel he's quite overrated, and was a bit of a prick...but enjoy a couple of his albums occasionally
Some of my favorite music and some of my least favorite music Some of the most interesting and amusing takes, some of the most obscenely stupid takes I love: The Grand Wazoo Waka/Jawaka Hot Rats Roxy & Elsewhere Uncle Meat Lumpy Gravy Burnt Weeny Sandwich YCDTOSA, Vol II YCDTOSA, Vol I (only the first disc, disc 2 is shite) Road Tapes (Helsinki) Imaginary Diseases I'm sometimes amused by: Fillmore East, June 1971 Bongo Fury Apostrophe Joe's Garage You Are What You Is We're Only In It For The Money Over-Nite Sensation a few tracks here and there on other records I pretty much hate: Sheik Yerbouti Baby Snakes Zoot Allures (the title track is beautiful though) 95% of the new music he put out from 1982 until he died
Overnite Sensation (Zappa´s first, real ´normal´ album) Roxy & Elsewhere (insanely complex and amazing to pull off live) Bongo Fury (probably like this because it was my first Zappa album) Studio Tan (for the cover and ´The Adventures of Greggery Peccary´) Joe´s Garage Act I Joe´s Garage Acts II & III (ultimate late 70s Zappa) Shut Up ´N Play Yer Guitar (bought this as a triple-album boxset - and its just guitar solos!) You Are What You Is (last great album he did - probably his ´The Beatles´) Ship Arriving Too Late To Save a Drowning Witch (because it´s got Moon Unit Zappa on it)
i like his non-guitar solo stuff best...which albums are those? someone on here said he overused guitar solos, which i agree with i prefer Sheik Yourbouti to any of that stuff i was in a car recently and put on 'Montana' , and it was some shitty version with a random never ending guitar solo...i had to apologise to everyone else in the car
Beefheart is fuckin shit compared to Frank Zappa. And that's not a criticism on Beefheart: he's just not on the same plane whatsoever.
Actually, no, Im being unfair to Beefheart - he's not shit, he's just too 'inaccessible'. I really like: Clear Spot Bluejeans & Moonbeams Shiny Beast
That album for me, just about reaches the point where he started to go too 'sexual parody/innnuendo'. Good album though - lots of weird jams and freaky guitar solos
Find his stuff grating on the whole. Since the comparisons been made already: Beefheart comes off as legitimately off the wall, Zappa just comes off sarcastic.
