This is the true era of bullshit. They had an excuse back in the day, but no excuses today. I think the Wilder vs Fury rematch has driven home to me just how full of shit these commentators and promoters are. Social media gives people outlets to foment their crap. David Haye telling me we are "Witnessing Greatness" when Fury overwhelms a hapless Wilder, guy who barely knows how to keep his hands up or slip a shot. It's funny, they tried to tell us about "Functional Weight Advantages" 10 years ago. When there were none. Then a guy comes along with an actual functional weight advantage, and they say he is "Fat". Perhaps they had gotten so used to seeing fighters cheat at the weight that they thought clauses was how it was done. They forgot that being heavier might be as important as draining the other guy to death? We witnessed a "Massive Upset" tonight. Apparently a guy who is 10/11 beats a guy who is 10/11 {-110 vs -110} and that's a huge upset. And now we got Noddy Hearn and Mandingo Joshua resurfacing, one full fight removed from being smeared over the canvas by an obese little man who would only get even more obese in the interim, offering up an even worse defence of his crown than Buster Douglas did. If you thought tonight was BS, wait, just fucking wait till Fury gets home and Noddy Hearn is on TV every 10 minutes. Plebs abound in this business.
Is true, but it hardly addresses the issue of Wilder being described as the "hardest hitting HW of all time", it hardly even approaches the fight being described as "saving boxing" or "bringing life back to Vegas". This is beyond superlative. This is simply not true.
If Wilder isn't the hardest punching heavyweight ever, he isn't far from it either. The "lies" about boxing dying and saving it have happened for over hundred years
Yes but today we have a 100 years of precedence to guide us, and HD video to review things, and still we come up with crap.........Vegas didn't die........it's just there are other cities. The test for boxings health is not what's happening in Vegas or New York. I think an argument can be made for Wilder being outside the top 10. He's now had two fights where he ain't scored a KO...all against a guy who was badly badly hurt by Steve Cunningham. He might be inside the top 10 if the test is "Top 10 HW who could KO you if you basically let them". Ortiz sat up and had a think about continuing. Compare that to Maskaev vs Tua or Norton vs Cooney or Shavers. It's not asking much. The public have access to tapes and tapes. Ask us to consider a theory. Don't tell us what is what in the face of proof to the contrary. Fug it, Rahman might be tops, or Tua, or Tommy Morrison for that matter.
I'm not convinced that commentary as a whole is shittier. I think a lot of boxing cards simply are and therefore it's more evident to knowledgeable boxing fans. The largest part of their job is hype regardless of who is in the ring. They're going to try to make every match-up sounds like it has the potential to be Hagler-Hearns. When it's dull they'll switch to it being a "fascinating technical battle". The hyperbole is often really annoying but they can't exactly tell customers what they've paid for is crap.
Stating it like an absolute fact is going too far though. They could have said "one of" or "possibly" and it would still be a strong statement without raising eyebrows. It's not just that it's subjective, but it's not even remotely close to a consensus opinion either.
I understand the general point........you can't sell shit if you keep calling it shit. I follow this nobody solicitor in Ireland, he has his own youtube channel and every weekend he releases a few videos, his view on life etc. Today he had a video out , very short, very simple. I agree with him. It's hard to be better. It's stupid to be cheaper. So you got to be different. I don't see much different out there these days. Just more "WOW! BOOM!" stuff.
Wilder is certainly up there as one of the most concussive punchers in heavyweight history. I still think Lewis hit harder though. I'll once again reference Lewis-Holy 1, where Lewis hit Holy with that right hand to the body that literally lifted Evander off the canvas.
I think Tua had better KO's and not just better because they were more concussive but because he dug himself out of a hole and kept better men like Lewis honest for longer. Tua's left could detonate on any version of Fury and get results. Fury treated Wilder like he was a non-puncher. The few shots he got through with were nothing. I reckon Cooney had a better left hook than Wilder. Like I say, a conclusive and critical examination of the facts might well see Wilder outside the top 10. Let's look at it. Tua Tyson Louis Foreman Marciano Shavers Lyle Big Cat Williams Liston Wlad Lewis That's no Cooney, no Frazier, no Weaver, no Bowe, No Golota.....it's been whittled down a bit. Who absolutely leaves the list to make way for Wilder? Marciano can't ice Splizka? Lyle can't splatter Ortiz? Marciano weighed 30lbs less than Wilder and he iced a guy I am not sure Wilder could even beat. Nothing against Wilder, I've never been in here hating the guy or riding his case, just I saw that Ortiz rematch and the man could have continued, he was not unconscious. He was just sat there and quit. Compare that to Ruiz vs Tua, or Moorer/Maskaev vs Tua. Dudes were OUT. Or Johnson vs Maskaev. Or Shavers vs Norton.
In all your years of watching boxing and it's many surprising results...Fury dropping & stopping Wilder was surprising?
It is in the Era of Baloney, I suppose. Let's look at the facts: The Bookies had the fight DEAD EVEN on the night. Fury was 3 stone heavier, that's 42lbs, a record for any HW title fight {between Career heavyweights} that doesn't feature Valuev or Carnera, both of whom were fake exposed champs. Wilder had failed to stop an inferior version and had already arguably lost to same. He'd been hurt in the 12th by a man who rose from dead, we are told. And here's the latest:- Tyson Fury: 'Maverick Fury can do no wrong but Anthony Joshua fight will seal immortality' Tyson Fury: 'Maverick Fury can do no wrong but Anthony Joshua fight will seal immortality'
Immortality? If Fury beats Joshua and retires, he will become the first HW to ever win the title twice, unify and retire with one partial-defence to his name. He failed a drug test after Wlad and then reneged on the rematch after it had been signed....losing his licence for failing more tests and basically just going out of business. And this guy is 1 fight from "Immortality"......having fought Wlad when Wlad was 15 years older and finished and then failed to rematch? In the meantime, old man Wlad has ALREADY fought the dude whom if Fury wins.......will bring Fury into the pantheon of the greats.......despite Joshuas crushing defeat to Ruiz and his gutless rematch? Fuck making 20 defences and having two reigns over 15 years combined, AMIRITE?
Standards are low these days...."Joshua fight will seal immortality"? ... Wilder Garbage with punching power.. Fury sasquatch with a jab Joshua fragile bitch...
Here's the rub..............I have no problem with standards being "Low". For what it is worth, it's entertaining, at least these guys seem to be fighting each other. But there's no fucking immortality to be had in beating a guy who got rubbed out by Andy Ruiz. "Hello? Hello? Is it my fat ass you're looking for"
That's absurd. Upsert always happened in boxing, and theres a ton of ATG who have lose to guy as bad or even worst than Ruiz. Now, I'm not saying AJ is an ATG (I don't think he ever will be) but to discount him because of his loss to Ruiz is precipitated
Fury has just never been seen as a puncher, Wilder had never been dropped as a pro, and after what happened in the first fight it was seen as a suicide mission for him to fight Wilder in the pocket. Of course it was surprising.
If Larry Holmes can be great for beating a bunch of nondescripts and marciano can be great for beating a bunch of ancient small fryes then Fury can be great for clearing up todays division, especially given his back story and the way he did it last night. Why not just enjoy it? The guy is great fun
Wasn't surprised at all. Like Fury always said "anyone over 220lb who sets tbemselves can punch hard"
There was no precedent from Fury's previous fights is my point, he's always been a mover and never sat down on his punches. It's not the first time he's promised a knockout either, he does that before every fight and then gets on his toes. No reason to believe this was going to be any different, figured he was just calling everyone's bluff again. Glad to be proven wrong though, was a great performance.
That's another reason he hired Sugar Hill though. You know that it was Mark Breland that taught Wilder how to punch properly? He's not a genetic freak.
Yeah, definitely why he was brought in, but it's rare you see such a successful change in style from a new trainer in their first fight together. A lot of the time it doesn't work and even when it does it's more of a gradual process. Re: Breland, I thought he was more of a recent acquisition? If he's been there from the start then that is actually quite disappointing as you'd have thought there would be more of an improvement in Wilder's technique.
Was he? He'd want to be, at 40lbs heavier. Even at that I can see Marciano put Ortiz to sleep if he catches him flush. Wilders best wins are stoppages. He's stopping guys.............guys who want to stand up and fight.....less so. Ortiz quit. In their first fight, he pasted fuck out of your man Stiverne and the guy went the distance. Fury, hurt worse by Cunningham, twice got up from his bombs and he was an unhealthy man in that fight. He's no killer. It's all context. He's digging himself out of holes. It's Gatti-esque shit. But Gatti was no Sadder the same way Wilder is no Foreman.
