O'Grady would be spoken of today in more higher terms had two things not happened to him: he got robbed in Scotland versus Jim Watt and should have won the WBC version of the lightweight title. 2 his father interfered and cost him the WBA title he won from Hilmer Kenty. He surely would have knocked Claude Noel out and that would have set the stage for a showdown with Ray Mancini for big money in a closed circuit fight. After that, the fighting life and interest seemed to go out of Sean completely. First time I saw Holiday- perhaps only time was against Shane Mosley and I was disappointed in both for non-effort. I don't think Sean would have any trouble at all with him.
Mosley was suffering from cramps and dehydration in that bout and still won going away O’Grady’s father ruined his career, for sure
think he created a bs title for his son to fight for, and he was destroyed by gannigan while fighting for it
O’Grady was clearly better than Holiday who was just a paper titlist O’Grady got robbed versus Watt and battered Kenty Holiday wouldn’t beat either
Long story short, He basically tried to play hardball with the WBA who told him to go fuck himself ... he made O’Grady relinquish the belt ... he then hastily created his own sanctioning body and with minimal preparation had his son defend his new “title” against a dangerous southpaw banger (Ganigan) which was obviously a disaster O’Grady certainly would’ve been favored to easily beat Claude Noel (his WBA mandatory) and would’ve been in line for an Irish/Italian showdown with Mancini which would’ve netted both a fortune His father was a loudmouth idiot
O'Grady-Mancini would have been an excellent fight, but I figure Mancini would have stopped Sean late.
Would have been an amazing fight. I liked O'Grady to win, probably setting up a return encounter. Sean should have been one of the wealthiest fighters behind Ray Leonard. After he was stripped, the desire went right out of him., understandably.
