I have a similar opinion of Martin Lawrence.

His sitcom was fuckin hilarious, but I never thought he was anything special as a stand-up comic. Average at best in that regard.

Certainly nowhere in the same universe as Pryor, Chappelle, and Murphy.

See I think B is your problem. You have what I refer to as Cannes syndrome. You’re trying so hard to not follow the majority consensus-or as you put it, to not be one of the sheep-that you completely shit on good shows and films. You think people don’t have their own opinions just because it aligns with the majority viewpoint even though you’re opinions usually aren’t your own either because you always blindly go against the majority opinion.

Try to judge stuff on its own merit and if it happens to align with the majority opinion don’t bleat yourself up about it.

I think his stand up special is pretty terrible bordering on unwatchable. Although he was pretty good in the few minutes where he would host Def Comedy Jam.

I was tryna be generous to Martin.

To be fair, "You So Crazy" was decent. Nothing more. But then again, I haven't watched You So Crazy in maybe 20 years. But yeah, Martin ain't much as a stand-up comic.

I'd even rate a guy like Mike Epps over Martin as a stand-up.

I wouldn’t go that far. You So Crazy actually had a couple funny moments whereas Mike Epps stand ups aren’t bordering on unwatchable they are unwatchable. I loved him in Next Friday though.

For absolute Pure Comedy: "Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C." to me. Honeymooners , All In The Family, Simpsons are all wonderful. If you look at the old Abbot and Costello TV shows they are setup identical to Seinfeld as Jerry has often said and they were funny as hell as well. Larry Hagman was a comedic genius in "I Dream Of Jeanie" and also Elizabeth Montgomery and Dick York in"Bewitched" and Fred Gwynne and Al Lewis in "The Munsters" another gem.

Epps has his moments. He's mostly MISS (about 70%), but when he HITS there's been a few times when he had me on the verge of tears laughing.

Martin's never gotten more than an average laugh outta me in his stand-ups.

Martin is closer to the level of Epps than he is the to the level of Pryor, Murphy, Chappelle, and Rock.

There's levels to black stand-up comedians.

Legends: R.Foxx, Pryor, Murphy, Chappelle, Rock.

Very good: Patrice O'Neal, Bernie Mac, Paul Mooney, Robin Harris.

    Good: Eddie Griffin, Katt Williams.

    Alright: Martin, Epps.

Mediocre: Kevin Hart, Chris Tucker, Cedric.

    BAD: DL Hughley, Steve Harvey.

The toughest guys to rate are the "good" ones like Eddie Griffin and Katt Wiiliams - both those dudes at times have been BRILLIANT - but I've also seen inconsistent shit from both.

The biggest shame was the death of Patrice O'Neal. That dude was funny enough to perhaps be a legend.

I think your list is very inconsistent and lacks thoroughness. I say that because unless I’m mistaken a few of those guys like Mac and Harris don’t have much standup history to be given such a high status IMO. Hell did Mac even have his own stand alone special? Also I’d have Martin and Epps on the very bottom and add Tucker to their tier and yes that means I think Hugley, Harvey, Hart and especially Cedric are all better than those three. I think Epps and Tucker’s standups were a couple of the worst I’ve ever seen.

Hannibal Buress and Jerrod Carmichael are very good.

Damon Wayans didn't do it for very long, but he was very under-rated, IMO.

I saw Aries live at The Stress Factory comedy club in Jersey about 5 years ago. He had me dying laughing.

Damon is the most talented of the Wayans bros as far as stand-up goes.

    Marlon is TERRIBLE!

In fact, Marlon and Nick Cannon belong in their own separate category of bad - below Hughley and Harvey.

I appreciate that DL Hughley tries to be politically/socially conscious, but the dude just isn't funny.

Ain't no way in HELLLLL Steve Harvey is better than Martin Lawrence, Mike Epps and Chris Tucker! I might give you Kevin Hart with his older material as better than Martin and Tucker, but not Harvey.

Martin and Tucker are buffoons for the most part, but they're Pryor good if you compare em to Steve Harvey.

Steve Harvey is on another level bad that can ONLY be exceeded by Marlon Wayans and Nick Cannon.

Yeah, agree with all this. Cannon might be one of the worst to ever get their own special.

Hughley could be funny, but he mostly just comes off like a dick, most of the time. I feel like he used to be funny, a long, long, long time ago.........................I mean, I thought Dane Cook was funny for about 3 seconds, a long, long, long time ago, but that shit wore off quick.

Hughley had his moments in the 90s on Def Comedy Jam. But those moments are clearly gone now.

Tracy Morgan belongs in the bad category. I'll always appreciate him as Hustle Man on Martin, but he's a lame stand-up comic.

Harvey's a buffoon, but he can be good for a chuckle here and there. I'd rather hang out with any of those guys, rather then Harvey, but he has a bit of a polish to him I guess.

Of The Original Kings of Comedy, Bernie Mac is to that tour, what Ron White was to the Blue Collar guys tour. Easily the best of the group, and even at times, the only ones who were actually bearable for any amount of time.

I like Tracy Morgan as a sketch guy and as an interview. I imagine he'd be fun as hell to hang around with. His stand-up was mostly horrible up until very recently. I think it was his last special, after he came back from his accident, I was pleasantly surprised with how much he improved.

Yeah, Cannon had the worst special I've ever seen.

I watched it simply because of the train wreck attraction to it, and it was even WORSE than I thought it would be.

Even a goof like Marlon might be able to muster ONE chuckle outta someone.

Dane Cook got maybe one or two chuckles outta me, even if 90% was cringe worthy.

But Cannon....is PAINFULLY unfunny. It's all forced, and allllllllll BAD... BAD... BAAADDDDD. You're only laughing because of how bad he is.

I would imagine that comedy Hell would be trapped in an eternal comedy club that features Nick Cannon and Amy Schumer.

I thought Schumer was bearable when she first came up.............like a poor, poor, poor womans, Sarah Silverman.........but she's only gotten worse and worse as the years have gone by.

It doesn't help Schumer's case that she's the most blatant joke stealer of all time.

I get the gist that she had a few original ideas coming up, ran outta them, decide to try on stealing, saw that it worked (somehow she became famous) and then figured, why be original?

Tracy Morgan is not only one of the unfunniest mother fuckers ever he's also THE most annoying mother fucker I had the displeasure of listening to.... he's just awful. AWFUL. Like straight up horrible. And I can't even distinguish between him and his character. He's just annoying and horrible all around.
